Discover Yauyos
Accommodation in Yauyos
Yauyos combines Andean scenery with a vibrant local history and traditions. From the Huangua viewpoint, you can look out over the town, agricultural terraces and Aquicha; a visitor tour also explores history, agriculture, handicrafts and typical dishes. Yauyos therefore offers several ways to shape your stay around scenery, culture or regional cuisine.
Townscape on the Río Yauyos
Yauyos lies in the Quechua region at an altitude of 2,882 meters on the western slope of the Andes. The town sits on the banks of the Río Yauyos, a tributary of the Río Cañete. Partly paved streets are as much a feature of the townscape as houses made of adobe and stone with corrugated metal roofs. These specific details give the town a different character from a purely scenic destination: the settlement and its surroundings are equally part of the travel experience.
If you are interested in views over the town, the Huangua viewpoint is a notable landmark. It is about 500 meters from Plaza de Yauyos and at an altitude of approximately 2,922 meters. From there, the view stretches over Yauyos and the agricultural terraces to the town of Aquicha. The viewpoint, terraces and settlement together form a picture in which the inhabited landscape meets the Andes.
History and local traditions
South of the town, on the heights of Ñaupahuasi Hill, lies the archaeological site of Ñaupahuasi. It was the ancient capital of Jattum Yauyos. For travelers interested in the area's earlier history, the site adds another historical point of interest to the view of the present-day town.
Yauyos's most important traditional festival takes place on August 4 and includes traditional dances. Pachamanca prepared in the Yauyos style is part of the festivities. Yauyos is also known for the calabacero tradition: sweets made from this local product are served at traditional festivals. The festival, dance and regional cuisine offer a distinct focus alongside the scenic surroundings. If you would particularly like to shape your stay around local traditions, these customs are a memorable part of the Yauyos experience.
Tour, food and handicrafts
A visitor tour in Yauyos introduces the town's history and showcases local agricultural production and handicrafts. It also includes a tasting of typical local dishes. This offers a way to discover several sides of the town: its history, agricultural products and handicrafts, as well as its cuisine. If you enjoy combining different discoveries on a trip, this offers more than a visit to a viewpoint alone.
Getting there and trails at Nevado de Llongote
The journey from San Vicente de Cañete to Pueblo de Yauyos is listed as 136 kilometers and approximately 3 hours and 37 minutes; it is made by private car on a paved road.
