An Early City with Monumental Structures
Six large pyramid-shaped structures define the Ciudad Sagrada. They do not stand alone: the cityscape also includes residential complexes and temples along the visitor route. The site therefore encompasses different types of structures and areas that help visitors understand the place. If you are interested in Caral’s early history, you can look beyond the pyramids to explore other parts of the complex.
The route may only be visited accompanied by a local guide or cultural interpreter authorized by the Zona Arqueológica Caral. Guided groups are limited to ten people. Desert Terrace and Remnant of the Riparian Forest
The nearby Ciudad Sagrada is located on a dry alluvial desert terrace above the Río Supe valley. The Bosque milenario de huarangos offers a different perspective on the landscape: it is a remnant of the former riparian forest that once stretched along both banks of the valley. During the Caral civilization, this forest was respected, preserved and regularly maintained. The dry terrace and the history of a preserved riparian landscape thus stand side by side.
Access and the Visitor Center
The described access route goes on foot over a pedestrian bridge and through the Bosque de Huarangos. You then follow a marked path for about 20 minutes to the visitor center. Alternatively, Route B runs along the riverbed; it is available only during the dry river months, from mid-May to mid-November. Before setting out, check local conditions and official visitor information. On the Caral–Minas Ámbar route, after 23 kilometers, at the level of the Centro de la Ciudad de Caral, there is a turnoff toward the pedestrian bridge.
The visitor center has parking and restrooms, a ticket office, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, handicrafts and tourist information to help plan your visit. The “Túnel de la ciencia y centro de información” presents scientific and technological developments, as well as Caral’s social organization and everyday life, in an accessible educational setting. It complements the view of the structures with insights into knowledge and daily life.
Regional Food and Architectural Influences
The “Vianderas de Caral” program, described in 2019, offered visitors and tourists typical regional dishes and desserts. The modules belonging to the program were made from organic materials such as caña brava and caña Guayaquil, as well as stone and clay. Their architectural style was inspired by some buildings in the urban centers of the Caral civilization. The historical description of the program thus connects regional cuisine with a specific architectural reference.
