San Ramón offers two distinct perspectives on the area: Plaza Mayor and the cathedral in the city center, as well as natural attractions nearby. These include Catarata El Tirol and Mirador Montañas De Bosques Encantados. When planning a trip, you can choose between urban history, religious culture and landscapes—and tailor your search for a vacation rental to your plans.

Waterfall, forest path and valley views

Catarata El Tirol consists of three tiers with a total height of 35 meters. A shallow pool about one meter deep forms at the waterfall. The route there is a footpath through vegetation that includes palms, orchids, bromeliads and ferns. The path itself and the variety of plants give the nature experience a tangible character, without requiring a set pace or a specific length of stay.

To get there, the route from Plaza Mayor de San Ramón follows a paved road for five kilometers to the Playa Hermosa sector. From there, it continues for two kilometers along an unpaved road to the waterfall. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out. This lets you factor the journey into your day’s plans without assuming a specific travel time.

Mirador Montañas De Bosques Encantados offers a different landscape. From the Chunchuyacu annex, the view stretches across the San Ramón Valley and the mountain range of the Chanchamayo Selva Alta. The waterfall and viewpoint thus offer different natural attractions: the cascading tiers and leafy footpath here, and wide views across valleys and mountains there.

Plaza Mayor and the city’s history

Plaza Mayor is in the city center and dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Its nine planted beds contain ornamental plants. In the center is a pool of about 50 square meters and one meter deep, with aquatic plants, fish and turtles. A monumental fish sculpture completes the setting. The plaza thus combines its historical significance with distinctive details to discover right in the city’s central square.

The pagoda-style pavilion on the plaza also contributes to its distinctive appearance. It honors San Ramón’s Chinese community, represented there since 1884 by the “Wha Yen Con Zie” society. The pavilion points to a specific aspect of local cultural history, while the flower beds, pool and sculpture give the plaza its distinctive character.

The cathedral and traces of history

Catedral de San Ramón is built mainly from adobe bricks and wood. It has a gabled roof, a white-painted facade with earth-toned details, and a bell tower visible from the main square. As the city’s most important Catholic temple, it is also the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of San Ramón. Its architecture and religious role make it a point of interest in its own right for anyone who wants to learn about local cultural life as well as nature.

Masses, patron saint festivals and other religious activities are held in the cathedral, with local residents and visitors taking part. If you would like to attend a specific celebration, check the dates in advance. Another historical trace is the former Casa Hacienda El Naranjal nearby. During the price boom of the 1940s, it produced up to 10,000 quintales of coffee per year. This figure belongs to its history and does not describe current production.

Flora and getting around San Ramón District

Jardín Etnobotánico Semilla Bendita is dedicated to researching and protecting the flora of the central Ceja de Selva, as well as sharing knowledge about it. In San Ramón District, the route from Plaza San Ramón follows a paved road for 1.6 kilometers to Puente Huacará, then continues for another 3.5 kilometers along an unpaved road to the garden. Check road conditions before setting out.

Choose the right base

When searching for a vacation rental in San Ramón, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: would you like to center your stay on the city’s history, with Plaza Mayor and the cathedral, or include natural attractions such as the waterfall and viewpoint? Then compare the location of a specific property with your plans. This way, you can choose your base according to the places you actually want to explore, rather than choosing accommodation independently of your itinerary.
