Pisac brings together archaeological remains from the Inca period, a modern area in the valley, a Sunday market and glimpses of local traditions. If your main reason for visiting is to explore historic sites, the Parque Arqueológico de Pisac offers a different focus from a visit to the market or a pottery demonstration in Cuyo Chico. These differences can help you decide how to prioritize your excursions during your stay in Pisac.

Archaeology between the highlands and the valley

The Parque Arqueológico de Pisac is divided into two areas: an ancient zone at a higher elevation with an archaeological site from the Inca period, and a modern zone in the valley dating from the colonial era. The park was declared a Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 2002. In K’allaQ’asa, one of the archaeological park’s five neighborhoods, visitors can see temples, palaces, courtyards, rooms and altars. The variety of architectural forms can be explored within a single neighborhood, without grouping the individual structures into one building type.

Some of the park’s most striking structures are the Torreones, also called Pucaras. These conical structures were used as water channels and fortifications during the Inca period. The 40 terraces of Acchapata offer another perspective on agricultural design: they form an inverted triangle and were used mainly for agriculture. Inti Huatana, meanwhile, served as an astronomical observatory during the Inca period and is considered Pisac’s Temple of the Sun. Visitors interested in the different functions of historic sites can consider these examples as distinct reasons to visit.

The route from Plaza de Pisac to the Parque Arqueológico de Pisac is 9.3 km. By private car, the drive takes about 15 minutes on a paved road. Pisac is also included in the list of archaeological parks and sites accessible to tourists with the Cusco Tourist Ticket. Both the specific route from the Plaza and the ticket offer are therefore relevant when planning your trip.

Andean culture and local traditions

The Museo Comunitario de Pisac has ethnographic and archaeological collections. It also holds workshops on textile-making and technology, where visitors can learn and practice traditional techniques. This offers a different way to engage with the culture than viewing archaeological structures. The Templo San Pedro Apóstol is also a monument recognized as a Cultural Heritage of the Nation of Peru. It is located in the district of Pisac, in the province of Calca, in the department of Cusco. Pisac’s traditional Varayoc system is likewise recognized as a Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

At the Pisac Sunday market, vendors wear traditional clothing, and the market serves to affirm Andean identity. Products are sourced directly from producers, in keeping with the local “from field to pot” concept. If you want an outing to include food and local market traditions as well as culture, you can plan a visit for Sunday.

A glimpse of Cuyo Chico

Cuyo Chico offers a hands-on pottery demonstration. A walk there also leads to a natural viewpoint overlooking the Río Vilcanota and the Parque Arqueológico de Pisac. The experience also includes tasting handmade quinoa empanadas: prepared in clay ovens, they are considered part of Andean culinary heritage. Pottery, scenery and food each offer a different focus and make Cuyo Chico a distinctive part of your trip.

Plan your stay in Pisac

When looking for a vacation rental in Pisac, you can start by thinking about which experiences you want to shape your stay: the archaeological sites, the museum’s collections and textile techniques, the Sunday market, or the demonstration and culinary experience in Cuyo Chico.
