Callao between fortress, port and wetlands
Accommodation in Callao
Callao combines maritime history with unusual museums and wetlands rich in biodiversity. The Real Felipe Fortress tells the story of the defence of the port of Lima; at the Museo Submarino Abtao, a former warship itself becomes a floating museum. At the same time, the Humedales de Ventanilla offer a very different perspective on the region. Which of these aspects interests you most can help guide your choice of holiday rental in Callao.
Fortress and maritime history
The Real Felipe Fortress is located in Callao and was built in the 18th century to protect the port of Lima from possible attacks. Castillo Real Felipe was declared a National Monument by Law No. 11841. This brings together the history of defence and official monument status in one place—a distinctive starting point if you are interested in Callao’s maritime past.
The Museo Naval del Perú Capitán de Navío AP Julio J. Elías Murguía is also one of the city’s maritime attractions. It is located on Jirón José Gálvez in Callao and is considered the only museum to display personal belongings of Miguel Grau Seminario. Visits to this museum and the Museo Submarino Abtao are among the experiences offered in the Zona Monumental del Callao. The art around Pasaje José Gálvez adds another cultural perspective to the surrounding area.
The Museo Submarino Abtao is a floating museum converted from a warship. Visitors can use the periscope as part of a simulated attack. Callao therefore offers different ways to explore maritime history side by side: the museum displaying Miguel Grau’s personal belongings and the experience centred on a former warship. The historic Muelle Dársena adds to this picture of the port. The pier was built to protect ships while they were being loaded and unloaded.
Monumental sites and varied themes
The Centro Histórico del Callao includes streets, mansions and balconies within a designated area bounded by several streets. The Iglesia Matriz adds its own architectural feature: the building is neoclassical and modelled on Greco-Roman examples. Those who want to explore both urban history and architecture during their stay will find a range of themes here, rather than just a single attraction.
The Circuito Turístico Peatonal is a walking tour of the main attractions of Callao Monumental. The Parques Temáticos, meanwhile, are open-air museums that showcase the history and military significance of the Peruvian Air Force, the Peruvian Army and the Peruvian Navy. These places focus on different subjects: a walking tour of attractions in one, and the history of the armed forces in the other.
Wetlands, coast and cuisine
Up to 126 resident and migratory bird species from the Andean, local, northern and southern regions have been recorded in the ACR Humedales de Ventanilla. A tourist route there follows three interpretive trails: Junco, Aves and Acuático. They offer guided interpretation, signage and tourist infrastructure. The named trails provide different thematic ways to explore the wetlands; the birdlife is a particular draw for anyone who also wants to experience nature on their trip.
The Balneario de Chucuito offers a different landscape, with beaches and waterfront promenades. Trips to the Islas Palomino depart from the piers at La Punta and Callao; advance reservations are required. If such an excursion is important to you, factor this reservation into your plans. The area’s maritime character is also reflected in the Ruta Marina gastronomic route, which includes Pan con Pejerrey, Ceviche, rice dishes with seafood and Parihuela, among other options.
When looking for a holiday rental, you can choose Callao based on the experiences that interest you most: maritime history, walks around Callao Monumental, birdwatching in the Humedales de Ventanilla, or coastal spots and cuisine. If you want to narrow your accommodation search to particular districts, you can find Callao and Bellavista District here.
