Huarango: Nature and Tradition
Accommodation in Huarango
Huarango cannot be reduced to a single style of excursion: the district brings together the open landscape around Laguna Azul, the area of Catarata Bella Encantadora, and cultural traditions. There are also distinctive water formations at Los Peroles de Piedra and a diverse range of animal and plant life. When looking for a vacation rental, consider whether the landscape, nature experiences, or the district’s cultural ties should shape your stay.
Laguna Azul and the District’s Landscape
Laguna Azul lies near the hamlet of La Laguna and the Barrio Chino sector in the district of Huarango. It is about 1 km long and 600 m wide, surrounded by extensive grasslands and tall pajonales. Its approximate dimensions and open vegetation give this landscape destination a character of its own. The access route follows a paved road from Puerto Ciruelo via Huarango and El Porvenir; the stated distance from Puerto Ciruelo is 30 km. Check road conditions before setting out.
The area around Catarata Bella Encantadora also brings water and nature together. The community considers November through June, during the rainy season, the most suitable time to visit. In the other months, water flow is considerably lower because of the dry season. Since rainfall and water flow vary from year to year, treat this seasonal guidance as a general indication.
The area around the waterfall is home to hummingbirds, Andean cock-of-the-rocks, chosco, sajinos, hedgehogs, and sloths, among other animals. Medicinal plants also grow there, including quina, also known as cascarilla, sangre de grado, carqueja, and yerba de la postema. Native flowers and colorful orchids are also part of the plant life. The natural features around the waterfall therefore differ considerably from the grasslands and pajonales around Laguna Azul.
Experiences and Cultural Connections
The Asociación Comunal de Turismo Agroecológica Las Malvinas (ACOTALMA) offers nature and adventure tourism at Catarata Bella Encantadora. Activities offered by the Asociación in the district also include coffee-related experiences, birdwatching, adventure and nature activities, and mystical activities with the local shaman. Before making specific plans, contact the Asociación directly to ask about individual activities and participation.
Community traditions also give Huarango a distinct character. The anniversary of the district’s political founding is celebrated on May 12 together with its settlements and hamlets. The 2023 singing competition aimed to honor the traditional popular song repertoire of the rural and urban district. The songs selected were intended to highlight a sense of connection with Huarango and Peru. For families looking to alternate between nature and culture, this offers a range of different themes to explore.
At Los Peroles de Piedra, striking whirlpools form as water cascades over the rocks. A 2016 field study described the Caverna de Incas as a particularly impressive natural viewpoint. Cerro Gallinero is also considered a natural habitat for wildlife and medicinal plants.
