Coporaque: Portals, Dances and Terraces
Accommodation in Coporaque
Coporaque combines striking architecture and local traditions with a landscape shaped by terraces. There are also dishes featuring distinctive ingredients and the Sallihua hot springs nearby. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the village itself from destinations outside it: its buildings, dances and museum form a cultural focus, while Sallihua is a separate destination in the surrounding area.
Portals, Chapel and Plaza
Ten portals made of stone and adobe shape the townscape at the entrances to the main plaza. Coporaque was therefore traditionally called the “Village of Portals.” Another distinctive building is the Capilla de San Sebastián de Coporaque: built in 1565, it is considered the oldest religious building in the Colca Valley. The chapel is built in the Renaissance style, has a rectangular floor plan and a gabled roof whose original structure was made of wood and ichu.
Plaza de la Cruz connects the Capilla de San Sebastián with the Templo de Santiago Apóstol. The plaza also serves as a setting for fairs, markets, festivals and community celebrations. Buildings and public events thus share a common setting here. Anyone interested in history and architecture will find not only individual buildings, but also a plaza where community life plays a role.
Culture, Dances and Community Experiences
The local museum is located in the Centro Cultural Colca de Coporaque. It displays mummies from the Tumbas de Yuraq Qaqa archaeological complex. The cultural center also promotes and presents local cultural heritage and brings together sociocultural forms of expression. Community-based experiential tourism activities are also offered in Coporaque.
Local traditions include dances with different associations: the Ccamile dance is performed in the agricultural plots belonging to Coporaque’s patron saints; the Wititi dance takes place during the feast of Saint Luke. The “pago al agua” tradition is associated with the fiesta de estanque. In August, it involves digging and maintaining the irrigation canals. These examples link dance and community work with different occasions in the village.
The Q'ocha Fiesta is also part of the region’s cultural heritage. On March 10, 2026, the Regional Government of Arequipa declared the Q'ocha Fiesta tradition of Coporaque, in Coporaque District, Caylloma Province, a matter of regional tourist interest. If you are planning a trip around this fiesta, check dates and whether it will actually take place separately.
Dishes with Clearly Named Ingredients
Convido and Pesque are part of Coporaque’s culinary identity. Convido is prepared with alpaca meat, black chuño, potatoes and patasca. Pesque is made from whipped quinoa and served either with chactado guinea pig or a guinea pig stew. The two dishes offer a clear contrast: Convido combines alpaca meat with several other ingredients, while Pesque is based on quinoa and can be served with two different guinea pig preparations. If local cuisine matters to you when choosing a destination, these are two specific dishes that capture Coporaque’s culinary character.
Terraces and Hot Springs Nearby
Agricultural terraces surround Coporaque; a large portion of the pre-Inca terrace systems is found in the surrounding area. The Sallihua hot springs lie three kilometers from the village. They are part of the Colca and Andagua Volcanoes Geopark and are designated geosite G41. This distinguishes the landscape right around the village from a named destination nearby: terraces form part of the townscape, while Sallihua lies some distance from the village.
Choosing the Right Location for Your Trip
When looking for a vacation rental, you can first consider whether you want to focus on Coporaque itself, with its portals, buildings, traditions and cultural center, or include destinations in the surrounding area as well. Sallihua lies three kilometers from the village, while terraces surround Coporaque.
