Tobatí: Crafts, Ceramics and Nature
Accommodation in Tobati
Tobatí combines a strong craft tradition with historic sites and a landscape shaped by hills. Known as the “Capital of Crafts and Ceramics,” the city in Paraguay is especially renowned for its ceramics and traditional crafts. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: learning about handmade pieces and how they are made, discovering historical heritage, or spending time in the landscape.
Crafts and how they are made
At Villa Artesanal, you can view and purchase handmade works by local craftspeople. The pieces combine traditional techniques with contemporary creativity. The annual Expo Feria Tobatí, especially in October, offers another look at local crafts: works from Tobatí and other parts of Paraguay are exhibited there. If you are interested in the journey from raw material to finished work, Kamba'i Artesanías offers experiences where visitors can learn more about the making process and talk with craftspeople. The workshop is part of the Ruta Nacional de Artesanía.
The offerings have different focuses: Villa Artesanal centers on viewing and purchasing finished works, while Kamba'i explores the making process and gives visitors a chance to interact with the craftspeople. TOBA also organizes workshops and activities open to the community that help teach and pass on traditional arts. You can focus on the objects themselves or take a closer interest in the knowledge and work behind them.
Historic sites and artistic materials
The Parroquia de la Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción de Tobatí has a history spanning more than 500 years. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of Tobatí was declared National Historical Heritage in 2006. Together, the parish’s long history and the church’s historic designation give a cultural visit a distinct focus.
At Parque Natural Ysypo, you’ll find life-size animal sculptures made from Ysypo by Diego Esquivel and his family. The material is also traditionally used for baskets and furniture. Here, a specific craft tradition takes artistic form: Ysypo is not only a material for practical objects, but also the medium for the animal figures in the park.
Hills, views and activities
From the Mirador de Tobatí, panoramic views stretch across the surrounding hills and the city. The climb is equipped with stairs and ramps. Tobatí’s extensive hills and uneven slopes also provide a setting for adventure activities such as hiking and rappelling, as well as direct contact with nature. This places viewpoints and outdoor activity alongside cultural experiences, without suggesting that they need to be part of the same kind of outing.
When planning your holiday, your preferred focus can help you decide: if you mainly want to see crafts and learn more about how they are made, Villa Artesanal, Kamba'i and the Expo Feria can be cultural stops. If you’d rather focus on views and activities in the hills, the Mirador and the landscape offer a different experience. It’s best to choose your holiday rental based on how you’d like to spend your time in Tobatí.
