Salento combines impressive views with nature and cultural experiences. From the Mirador Alto de la Cruz, you can see the Valle de Cócora and Salento; Ecoparque El Mirador offers views of the mountains of the Cordillera Central, the valley, and the course of the Río Quindío. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: each viewpoint highlights different landscape features.

Viewpoints with Different Vistas

At the Mirador Alto de la Cruz, the views of Salento and the Valle de Cócora take center stage. At Ecoparque El Mirador, the view also extends to the mountains of the Cordillera Central and follows the Río Quindío. When deciding which impressions you want to shape your stay, you can distinguish between these viewpoints by their specific features rather than treating them as interchangeable vistas.

The area around the Valle de Cócora also offers a variety of nature and landscape features: the Acaime and Estrella de Agua nature reserves, a cloud forest, and Cerro Morrogacho are all located there. Protected natural areas, forest, and mountain scenery can all be found side by side. There is also an Indigenous cemetery in the same area. The cemetery adds a cultural dimension to the natural and landscape features.

Places and History in the Surrounding Area

Boquía is a small village with traditional houses along the route to Salento. The La Explanación Bridge is nearby. This centuries-old structure is also part of the history of transportation: trains from Buenaventura to Bogotá used to cross the bridge. A visit therefore combines a look at a small settlement with a historic structure whose former purpose is clear.

The experiences are quite different: the Cabalgata Cascada de Boquerón Salento horseback ride starts in Salento. The route passes a coffee-growing area and continues to the Río Boquerón, which the horses cross several times. Those especially interested in coffee can find a different focus on the El Ocaso Salento coffee tour in the municipality: it includes visits to coffee plantations, picking coffee, sowing seeds, and transplanting seedlings. Advance reservations are required for this tour; confirm current availability before your visit.

Experience Nature and Plan Your Stay

There are several opportunities for birdwatching in the Valle de Cócora during ecological hikes. This offers a different way to experience the landscape than looking out from a viewpoint: instead of focusing on individual panoramas, it combines birdwatching with hikes in the valley. Horseback riding, coffee activities, birdwatching, and viewpoints therefore offer different themes to help you plan your stay.

This personal focus can also help guide your choice of vacation rental: consider whether you are most interested in the views, coffee activities, wildlife watching, or historic sites. The experiences described are not the same, and you do not need to combine them all into a single day’s itinerary.
