Discover Montenegro: Church, coffee and the central park
Accommodation in Montenegro
Discover Montenegro through its cultural and culinary landmarks: Iglesia San José represents the town’s religious heritage, the central park brings together gardens, paths and sculptures, and Edificio Cadavid offers coffee tastings as part of a visit. When choosing a vacation rental, it can therefore help to consider whether you mainly want to explore places in town or also include destinations outside Montenegro.
Church and public spaces
Iglesia San José is considered Montenegro’s oldest and most important religious building. It stands at the corner of Carrera 6 and Calle 16, one block from the town hall. For the faithful in Montenegro, it is an important gathering place, especially at Christmas and during Semana Santa. Its status as a building and its role as a gathering place offer two different reasons to take note of the church: religious heritage and community life.
In the central park, gardens and footpaths surround the sculptures of Simón Bolívar and the bronze replica of the Indigenous Quimbaya figure Cuturrumbí. The park is suitable for walks both during the day and at night. While religious significance is the main focus at Iglesia San José, gardens, paths and public sculptures shape a visit to the park. If you enjoy exploring Montenegro on foot, the park offers a different focus within the town.
Coffee and local offerings
Street vendors in the central park sell fruit and sweets, while local products are available at the Guadua kiosks. Sweets are also sold in Montenegro’s central square, amid traditional architecture, including fruit salpicón and cotton candy. The offerings therefore vary by location: in the park, local products at the kiosks complement the street vendors’ goods, while the sweets mentioned are the main focus in the square.
Edificio Cadavid is on the northwest side of the central park, next to Iglesia San José. A traditional café on the ground floor serves coffee made with an antique machine. Montenegro offers a range of culinary experiences: things for sale in public spaces and a specific coffee tasting at the café. If you are coming for a particular dish or the tasting, check in advance what is available on the day of your visit and when the café is open.
Montenegro as a base
In Pueblo Tapao, in the rural municipality area and not in the town of Montenegro itself, the Museo Interactivo del Café has three interactive rooms. They cover the origins and cultivation of coffee, coffee culture, and its marketing and industrialization. The café at Edificio Cadavid and the museum have different focuses: at the café, you can try coffee made with an antique machine, while the museum’s several rooms explore different coffee-related topics.
Parque Nacional del Café is also outside the town, 6 km from Montenegro. When choosing a vacation rental, you can therefore weigh whether to focus your stay on Montenegro’s cultural and culinary attractions or include other destinations. If Iglesia San José, the central park and the café at Edificio Cadavid are your main priorities, a location within Montenegro may be a useful selection criterion. If these destinations are also part of your plans, take the distance and the museum’s location in Pueblo Tapao into account.
