Around Quillaipe, nature experiences in nearby Parque Katalapi meet cultural references tied to specific years. The trails there pass through different plant habitats, lead to a viewpoint, and wind through evergreen rainforest. As you plan your trip, you can consider which of these experiences interest you most and whether you would prefer to focus your stay on the nature trails or on the history of local traditional events.

Trails through plant habitats and to the viewpoint

The 1,200-meter-long Chilco Trail, also called Sendero del Chilco, passes trees, shrubs, ferns, and climbing plants in Parque Katalapi. Along the trail, ecotourists receive an information sheet with scientific, ecological, and ethnobotanical descriptions of the species found there. The trail thus combines plant observation with information about the species—an interesting option for anyone who wants to learn not only about the route but also about the plant life.

Another destination nearby is the Mirador Trail in Parque Katalapi. It leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Cordillera de Quillaipe. The Sendero del Mirador Cordillera de Quillaipe extends the previous trail by 1,300 meters and crosses the Tepual River on a suspension bridge. The viewpoint, mountain views, and river crossing give this section a different character from the plant trail.

Rainforest, trees, and a trail rated easy

The 900-meter-long “El Bosque te Salud‐da” Trail is rated as an easy route. It was designed for older people and people with disabilities, including blind people. Advance reservations are required for visits to Parque Katalapi.

The Los Coigües Trail is 2,500 meters long and runs through evergreen temperate rainforest. The trail begins at a 17-year-old coigüe and ends at a 300-year-old coigüe called the “Grandfather of the Forest.” Native birds can be heard and seen along the route. Unlike the Chilco Trail, the focus here is not on the plant species described, but on the rainforest, the coigües of different ages, and the birdlife. The trails therefore offer different ways to explore nature in nearby Parque Katalapi.

Traditional events tied to specific years

The cultural references to Quillaipe can also be clearly dated. In January 2024, Quillaipe was listed as a venue in the City of Puerto Montt’s Ruta de las Tradiciones summer program. For January 23 and 24, 2016, costumbrista festivals in Quilaipe and La Vara were announced as part of the Ruta de las Tradiciones. These two references relate to different editions and years.

When choosing a vacation rental in Quillaipe, you can therefore match your personal interests with the experiences described: Are you particularly interested in forest trails, plants, and birds, or would you also like to learn about traditional events? The nature trails are close to the destination; their lengths, the easy rating of one trail, and the specific features described for each can help you distinguish between different types of outings. Remember that advance reservations are required for a visit to Parque Katalapi.
