In Cochamó, there are plenty of ways to explore, from views of the Reloncaví Estuary to routes that start in town or pass through on a multi-day trip. From the waterfront promenade, you can look out over the estuary; the circular trail in the Cochamó Valley starts in town. This lets you choose between a view of the water, cultural history and different routes.

The church and local festival history

The Iglesia María Inmaculada de Cochamó has two different historical dates associated with it: it was built in 1890 by order of the Archdiocese of Ancud and founded in 1901. The construction and founding took place in different years. It was built from Alerce and Mañío wood, and its design is influenced by Chiloé architecture. A local celebration is also part of Cochamó’s history: the first Semana Cochamonina was held in February 1973.

The route to the valley and seasonal planning

The circular trail in the Cochamó Valley begins in the town of Cochamó. Summer, from December onward, is the recommended time to hike it because snow remains for a long time on the upper sections of the trail. This seasonal guidance can help with planning; as conditions may vary, check the current situation before setting out.

Sea kayaking and the Cochamó Pass

Sea kayaking with a guide or instructor is considered easy in Cochamó and suitable for people with no prior experience. A two-day sea kayaking circuit goes from Ralún across the Reloncaví Estuary to Cochamó on the first day, then from Cochamó to Río Puelo on the second; along the way, it offers impressive views of Yates Volcano. Cochamó is one section of the route, not its entire length. Guided horseback rides and hikes can be booked on the historic Cochamó Pass; check current availability before your trip.

The difference matters when planning your days: the sea kayaking circuit is designed as a two-day trip, while for the circular trail in the valley, the main consideration is the seasonal recommendation to go from December onward. The two options therefore differ in their time commitment and recommended travel season.
