Tocopilla between Coastal Landscapes and Geopark
Accommodation in Tocopilla
Tocopilla offers more than one way to experience the coast: landscape features, designed spaces, and a seasonal beach resort each create a different impression. When planning your trip, consider whether you are especially interested in rocks and geology, a panoramic view, or a beach resort.
Coastal Landscapes in the South
Geoparque Mirador Sur is located in southern Tocopilla, in the Villa Pacífico Sur neighborhood, at the foot of the prominent coastal escarpment that borders the narrow coastal plain of the Atacama Desert. Here, the plain and the rocky edge form two clearly distinct landscape features. The Geopark is situated in this coastal area and incorporates the rocks into its design.
Geoparque Mirador Sur: Paths Among the Rocks
The Geopark is a public space with 8,500 square meters of interior area. It was developed in 2019 by Minvu through Seremi and Serviu; the Municipality of Tocopilla maintains it. Walking paths, resting areas, and viewpoints are laid out between, on, and beneath the rocks. In this way, the site brings together movement, places to linger, and views within a designed space.
The Geopark was conceived as an outdoor classroom with interpretive routes and observation points for geology. The term describes a design that explicitly focuses on geology: the routes and observation points are intended for geological observation. This distinguishes the concept from a viewpoint, where the panorama is the main focus.
Panoramic Views and a Beach Resort
Cerro La Cruz is a viewpoint offering panoramic views of Tocopilla. Together with the Geopark, it highlights a useful distinction for trip planning: here, the view from the viewpoint is the focus; there, it is the combination of paths, resting areas, and geological design. Those wishing to explore Tocopilla can therefore choose between different ways of engaging with the landscape.
The historic Caleta Boy beach resort adds a seasonal coastal destination to these perspectives. During the modernization of the coastal infrastructure, it received a shade structure that provides protection for summer visitors; seasonal operations were not interrupted. As the condition of the shade structure may change, it is best to check whether it is usable before your visit.
Guided Activities in Municipal Holiday Programs
As part of a municipal holiday program, a guided bird-watching activity was organized at Caleta Vieja, also known as Playa Tercera. A guided trek to Cerro La Cruz was also part of a municipal holiday program. About 30 people climbed together from the Virgen del Rincón area to the summit. These examples represent different types of activities: bird-watching at Caleta Vieja and a group climb to the viewpoint.
