Tocopilla Province: Coast, Nitrate Town and River Landscape
Accommodation in Tocopilla Province
Different travel interests come together in Tocopilla Province: María Elena represents a nitrate town and engineering, the coastal towns offer a range of beach and fishing opportunities, and the Río Loa shapes a distinctive river landscape. When choosing a holiday rental, it is therefore worth first asking what you want to define your stay: historic places, time by the water or views of the landscape.
Nitrate Town and Historic Places
María Elena is Chile’s only active nitrate town. The Tranque Sloman is also located there; this engineering structure was declared a Historic Monument on January 15, 1980, by D.S. 0433. The town and the structure offer two distinct historical points of interest: María Elena’s special status as a nitrate town and the technical character of the Tranque.
The Ruinas de Gatico tell a different story. They preserve the remains of an old Bolivian port that came under Chilean sovereignty after the War of the Pacific. The Parque Arqueológico de Quillagua, an archaeological site associated with the Quillagua geoglyphs, is also located in the commune of María Elena. The historical perspective thus extends from engineering and the nitrate town to a former port and archaeological connections.
Coastal Towns with Different Highlights
Caleta Paquica is a summer coastal area with a fine white-sand beach suited to water sports. Sport fishing and access via an unpaved road are the main features of Caleta Punta Arenas. Playa Punta Blanca can also be reached via an unpaved road; it is suitable for fishing and sporting activities. As a family-friendly swimming destination, it has camping facilities.
Those looking for a more sheltered bay will find a different kind of coastline at Playa Punta de Atala: large rocks protect the small bay, where the water is calm. It is suitable for swimming, shore fishing and nautical activities. The differences between a water-sports beach, fishing opportunities and a sheltered bay can help you narrow down your interests, without treating these places as interchangeable beach destinations.
Caleta Urco is a tourist destination visited by families and holidaymakers from across the region. For Balneario Caleta Boy, the municipality reported a new shade structure and upgraded coastal infrastructure to protect holidaymakers on January 18, 2024. Since the condition of infrastructure can change over time, it is advisable to check it before visiting.
River Landscape and Tocopilla
At 440 kilometers, the Río Loa is Chile’s longest river and forms important oases along its course. One documented area is in the commune of María Elena in Tocopilla Province. The river and coastal towns offer different highlights: here, a long river landscape and oases; there, beaches, bays and activities on the water.
The city of Tocopilla also offers specific points of interest for planning a trip. Cerro La Cruz is a panoramic viewpoint in Tocopilla. Teatro Andrés Pérez is associated with culture and events, while restaurants offer ways to enjoy the local cuisine. Nature and hiking trails are also associated with the geopark in Tocopilla.
Choose a Holiday Rental Based on Your Destinations
If María Elena is your main destination, the route goes via Ruta 5 Norte and then branches off onto Ruta B168. Check traffic conditions before setting out. For coastal visits, consider what you are looking for: swimming and nautical activities at Playa Punta de Atala, water sports at Caleta Paquica or fishing at suitable locations. These options describe different highlights, not a uniform offering at every coastal town.
