Jacareí combines urban history with experiences involving water, green spaces and culture. The Rio Paraíba flows through the city or is connected to it; the Represa do Jaguari also shapes Jacareí. Other attractions include an exhibition on railway history, museums with regional collections and leisure activities for a range of interests. When choosing your holiday rental, you can first consider whether you want to focus your trip on culture, outdoor activities or both.

Urban History and Collections

The revitalized Estação Cultural is located at Pátio dos Trilhos. It focuses on Jacareí’s history and houses the “Memórias dos Trilhos” exhibition on the city’s railway history. Pátio dos Trilhos itself is a former railway station where cultural events are held. If you are interested in how the city developed, you will find two different points of interest here: the railway exhibition and the former station as a venue for cultural events.

The Arquivo Público e Histórico do Município de Jacareí preserves the city’s documentary heritage and holds records dating from the 17th to the 20th century. Its two collections can be consulted by the public free of charge at the Centro de Memória de Jacareí. For visitors who prefer to learn about history through museum objects, the Museu de Antropologia do Vale do Paraíba offers a Baroque collection of more than 4,000 objects. These include Paulistinhas and portraits of historical figures from the city. The museum is housed in the historic Solar Gomes Leitão; an inscription dates its construction to 1857.

Religious history is also part of the cityscape: the Igreja Matriz Imaculada Conceição was Jacareí’s first church and a center of urban development. The Capela São Sebastião is an 18th-century religious monument. It is believed to have been built by Jesuits during their time in the Vale do Paraíba. For stage performances, the Teatro Municipal Ariano Suassuna in the Complexo Educacional Paulo Freire has 700 seats.

Water, Green Spaces and Outdoor Activities

The Represa do Jaguari hosts swimming and canoeing competitions and offers leisure activities for families. The Viveiro Municipal “Seo Moura” has a different focus: its offerings include environmental education, planting seedlings and forest trails for small groups. Every Sunday, it hosts the “Viver o Viveiro” program, with activities related to environmental education and ecotourism. In Jacareí, water-based events and nature activities are therefore distinct ways to plan a day.

Parque dos Eucaliptos brings together several leisure options: a skate park, a multipurpose stage for performances, a playground and a miniature city where traffic rules are taught. If you prefer walking or cycling, Parque Cassununga has a walking path and a cycle path. The grounds also include a rest area with benches, pergolas, lawns, landscaping and an outdoor fitness area. Parque Cassununga was created in 2019 by revitalizing a site in the Campo Grande neighborhood where tracks belonging to the RFFSA railway network had previously run.

For a cycling trip, the Rota Cicloturística runs through the Campo Grande and Bom Jesus de Jacareí neighborhoods. It starts at Parque da Cidade and passes Parque Linear Cassununga. This gives you specific guidance when choosing a route: the Cicloturística is a tour through named neighborhoods, while Parque Cassununga offers several paths and places to relax on a revitalized former railway site.

Local Discoveries and a Base for Your Trip

The Mercado Municipal de Jacareí has 120 stalls offering a wide range of goods: fruit and vegetables, flowers, fish, meat, grains, herbs and handicrafts. To get a taste of local variety, you can combine a visit to the market with cultural or active pursuits, though these offer different kinds of experiences. The Nossa Senhora do Novo Caminho service is held at Mosteiro Ain Karin on the 11th of every month. If you prefer a brewery tour, Inside the Star in Jacareí offers an immersive experience: it covers the history of the brands, takes you into areas of the brewery and a brand shop, and ends with a tasting.

The Presidente Dutra Highway runs through Jacareí and is a specific point of reference for planning your journey. When looking for a holiday rental, you can use your preferred experiences as a guide: Would you mainly like to explore collections and urban history, go cycling, or spend time in green spaces and by the Represa do Jaguari? The range of themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip, without assuming that you need to stay in a particular area.
