Itaberá between Tropeiro history and waterfalls
Accommodation in Itaberá
Itaberá combines Tropeiro history with natural attractions in the municipality. The traditional Tropeada Itararé–Sorocaba passes through Itaberá; historic roads, Dia do Tropeiro, and several waterfalls offer different points of interest. The Trilha da Estrada Velha also links a former road route with nature. When planning your trip, the first question is whether history or natural attractions should be the main focus.
Tropeada and Dia do Tropeiro
The traditional Tropeada Itararé–Sorocaba passes through Itaberá. In the broader regional context, the Tropeada Paulista from Itararé to Sorocaba takes place annually in the second half of May in the southwest of the state of São Paulo. In the municipality of Itaberá, Dia do Tropeiro is also observed annually on May 22; the corresponding municipal law was enacted on July 16, 2026. The route and the date are different points of reference: the Tropeada passes through Itaberá, while Dia do Tropeiro is observed annually at the municipal level. If you are planning a visit for a specific date, check the current event dates.
History along old roads
Another historic trace is the old Estrada da Mata in the south of the municipality of Itaberá. It ran through the area of what is now the district of Engenheiro Maia. Barão de Antonina (João da Silva Machado) built and maintained the road. It was the only safe connection between southern Brazil and the Feira de Muares de Sorocaba; Tropeiros drove cattle and mules along it from the southern pasturelands. The road itself thus became part of the history: it linked the pasturelands in the south with the mule fair in Sorocaba.
The Trilha da Estrada Velha
The Trilha da Estrada Velha follows a former road that ran through the Estação Ecológica Itaberá and is no longer in use. The trail is associated with the Estação Ecológica Itaberá. Here, a historic road route meets a natural attraction. If you plan to take this particular trail, check access in advance.
Waterfalls in the municipality
Cascata Toriba is considered a tourist attraction in the region of the Toriba do Sul district. Cascata dos Netos is near Bairro Tomé, which is also called Bairro dos Netos. Cascata Agrovila III is associated with the Rio Pirituba. Cachoeira do Saltinho is in Bairro do Salto; Cachoeira do Salto is also one of the attractions of the municipality of Itaberá. The locations differ: Toriba do Sul, Bairro Tomé or Bairro dos Netos, Rio Pirituba, and Bairro do Salto give you specific reference points for further planning.
Choose the right vacation rental for your trip
When looking for a vacation rental, you can start with the focus you want. For Tropeiro history, consider the route, the annually observed Dia do Tropeiro, and the historic Estrada da Mata; for natural attractions, you can use the trail and individual waterfalls as starting points for your plans. This helps you decide what kind of discovery you are looking for on your trip.
