Accommodation in Franca
Franca brings together a distinctive shoe-making history, striking architecture, nature trails, and lively event venues. The city is known as the “capital of men’s shoes”; according to data from 2020, it has around 100 shoe factories. Visitors planning a trip that combines culture, outdoor activities, and discoveries to suit different interests will find a wide range of things to explore here. When choosing a vacation rental, consider whether you’d most like to discover Franca’s cultural sites, outdoor activities, or events.
Shoe-making history and distinctive architecture
The Museu do Calçado de Franca was founded to preserve the history, heritage, and culture of local shoe production. When it opened, it held more than 3,000 objects related to the history of footwear, including shoes from different eras, tools, documents, and photographs. The museum offers a look at Franca’s shoe-making tradition, from finished shoes to the objects and records associated with their production. Shopping do Calçado de Franca has a different focus: it is a shopping center for shoes and clothing.
An unusual historic landmark is the Relógio do Sol de Franca sundial. The French Capuchin friar Frei Germano de Annecy built the monument between 1886 and 1887; it was designed to show the hours of the day. It is one of only a few sundials of this type in the world. The other known example is in Annecy, France. The Fonte Luminosa de Franca, a historic landmark and tourist attraction, is located in Praça Nossa Senhora da Conceição in the city center. Its sculpture depicts four female figures representing the four seasons.
Franca’s cultural venues also have a range of different focuses. Teatro Municipal José Cyrino Goulart hosts theater, music, and dance performances and is considered the city’s main cultural venue, as well as the region’s only theater. At the Casa da Cultura e do Artista Francano, which is open to the public, artists can exhibit their work and art enthusiasts can view it. The building is also home to the MIS (Museu da Imagem e do Som), the Pinacoteca Municipal “Miguel Ângelo Pucci,” the Academia Francana de Letras, the Ateliê Bonaventura Cariolato, and the Memorial da Resistência Negra. The Sé Catedral Nossa Senhora da Conceição is the seat of the Diocese of Franca and features eclectic architecture with Gothic and neoclassical influences.
Nature trails, outdoor activities, and events
For time outdoors, the Jardim Zoobotânico de Franca offers nature trails, plant nurseries, areas to relax, and wildlife conservation projects. Its special facilities include a meliponary with several species of native stingless bees and an aviary for wild birds undergoing rehabilitation before release into the wild. The garden also grows seedlings for urban greening and regional reforestation projects. Visitors can enjoy nature while learning about wildlife conservation and the garden’s seedling programs.
For more active pursuits, Parque dos Trabalhadores has marked trails covering more than six kilometers through native forest, suitable for walking or cycling. The park also has sand courts for volleyball and beach tennis, a soccer field, and restrooms and changing rooms. At Parque de Exposições Fernando Costa, you can walk, run, and have a picnic. The site also hosts agricultural fairs, food fairs, and cultural festivals such as the Cavalhadas. Visitors can explore its listed historic buildings.
Ginásio Poliesportivo “Pedrocão” hosts historic games, cultural events, and competitions that attract fans and visitors of all ages. Festa Nossa Senhora de Achiropita is a distinctive culinary and community tradition: it has been celebrated in Franca every August since 2003. At the festival, local nonprofit organizations prepare and sell Italian dishes. Your travel plans can therefore accommodate a range of interests, from nature trails and sports to cultural events and regional festivals.
Franca is also the starting point for a 624 km section of the Caminho da Fé. Together with the museums, event venues, and outdoor activities, this offers a wide range of options for choosing the focus of your stay.
