Amparo: Market History, Astronomy and Views
Accommodation in Amparo
In Amparo, restored market history, astronomical facilities and panoramic views over the city come together. The Município de Amparo also has historic fazendas with their own stories and culinary offerings. This gives you several distinct interests to choose from when planning your trip, before you look for a holiday apartment.
Market History and a Museum Visit
The Mercado Municipal de Amparo is in the city centre, has been restored and is protected by Condephaat. The market gives the city’s history a tangible setting and combines a visit to the centre with a look at protected architecture. The Museu Bernardino de Campos adds to the cultural offering. It is open Thursday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm; school groups are received on Tuesdays and Wednesdays by prior appointment. Check the opening hours before your visit, as they may change.
Astronomy in Precise Measurements
The Polo Astronômico de Amparo has a reflector telescope with a 650-millimetre aperture and a modern digital planetarium with a projection dome measuring eight metres in diameter. These figures refer to two different facilities: 650 millimetres describes the telescope’s aperture, while eight metres is the diameter of the dome. This gives astronomy in Amparo both an optical instrument and a digital projection environment. For travellers interested in technology and astronomy, the Polo offers a clearly defined point of interest.
Panoramic Views at Parque Municipal Chico Mendes
Parque Municipal Chico Mendes is located on Morro da Biquinha, covers 7,000 square metres and offers panoramic views of Amparo. Here, the focus is neither market architecture nor an astronomical instrument, but the view of the city. Its location on the hill and its stated area make the park a specific landscape feature to include in your trip planning. You can thus experience Amparo through a viewpoint as well as through its cultural and astronomical attractions.
Historic Fazendas in the Município de Amparo
Fazenda Atalaia was established in 1870 in the Município de Amparo, in the state of São Paulo. It preserves its original architecture, traditional building techniques and the memory of 19th-century production methods. An approximately 50-minute historical tour takes place Tuesday to Sunday, as well as on public holidays and bridge holidays. It includes a personalised tasting of the estate’s own cheeses. As the schedule may change, check it before your trip.
Fazenda Benedetti is also located in the Município de Amparo. A tour programme described in 2023 includes a guided 1.2-kilometre walk along the Estrada do Café e da Cachaça. The tour passes the site of the fazenda’s first distillery and tells the story of its founder, Antônio Benedetti, known as Gran Nonno. The programme described also includes a guided tasting of three special cachaças. Before your trip, confirm whether the tour and tasting can currently be booked.
The two tour offerings can be distinguished by their different details: Atalaia is described as taking approximately 50 minutes, while Benedetti’s route is 1.2 kilometres long. The figures describe different things—one is a duration, the other a distance. Another culinary spot in the Município is Café Spazio Benedetti, which serves sandwiches, homemade cakes, juices and freshly brewed coffee; individual offerings may change.
Which Experiences Suit Your Trip?
When choosing accommodation, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: market history and a museum, astronomy, a panoramic view, or the historic and culinary offerings of the fazendas. If you are travelling with children, this selection can help you discuss shared interests for the trip without treating every experience in the same way. You can then compare holiday apartments based on your own plans and the offerings of each accommodation.
