Discover Orleans through its culture and public art: the Museu ao Ar Livre Princesa Isabel preserves the material culture of various ethnic groups and a collection originating from immigration. The Esculturas do Paredão offer a very different perspective: depictions carved into the rock beside the Rio Tubarão. When planning your trip, you can choose between the museum’s cultural focus and the biblical scenes of the rock art.

Culture at the Museu ao Ar Livre Princesa Isabel

The Museu ao Ar Livre Princesa Isabel focuses on material culture. The combination of different ethnic groups and a collection originating from immigration offers a glimpse into diverse cultural backgrounds. If you’re travelling with children, you can use these themes as a starting point for conversation: What ideas about everyday life and origins can be connected with material culture? What stories can objects tell about people and their life journeys? These questions invite you to reflect together, without requiring any particular exhibits.

The museum also offers the “Luz de Lamparina” experience. It allows visitors to explore the museum areas from an ancestral perspective. This distinctive point of view complements the museum’s cultural and historical focus: rather than asking only about individual objects, you can also consider how a place might be understood from an earlier perspective. If you’re interested in this experience, you can take it into account as a separate aspect of your museum visit when planning your trip.

The museum has set opening hours: Tuesday to Friday, visitors are welcome from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, it is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm; admission is available until 5:30 pm. Groups are asked to register in advance. When planning a family outing, it’s especially helpful to keep the morning and afternoon opening times on weekdays in mind. On weekends and public holidays, the stated visiting hours are continuous.

The Esculturas do Paredão on the Rio Tubarão

The Esculturas do Paredão are located on the banks of the Rio Tubarão, on Rua Ethienne Stawiarski in Orleans. Their panels are carved into the rock and depict biblical scenes. They were created by the artist José Fernandes, known as Zé Diabo. The location, material, and subject matter each offer a different way to appreciate the sculptures: you can focus on the forms carved into the rock, look at the scenes depicted, or learn more about the artist and his work.

With children, you can look at the biblical scenes together and consider how the depictions can be recognised. What changes when an image is carved into rock rather than shown on a separate surface? These questions connect directly to the described motifs and the way they are presented. The rock art is therefore quite distinct from the museum’s cultural and historical focus, and you don’t have to experience both places in the same way.

Which cultural interests suit your trip?

These cultural interests can also shape your choice of vacation rental in Orleans: decide which themes appeal to you most on your trip and choose where to stay accordingly. Orleans remains the shared destination, while the museum and the rock art offer different reasons to explore the city.

If you’d like to discover more destinations, you can also find Rio Do Sul, Ituporanga, Fragosos, Tijucas, Doutor Pedrinho, Tubarão, Piçarras and Fraiburgo here.
