Santa Maria Madalena: Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Santa Maria Madalena
Santa Maria Madalena can be explored at different scales: the climb up Pedra Dubois is part of the town center, while swimming and hiking destinations can also be found nearby and across the municipality. There is also distinctive architecture, places of remembrance in the historic center, and cultural institutions. The town’s history and nature experiences therefore come together in different ways.
A climb in the town center, water nearby
Pedra Dubois is in the town center of Santa Maria Madalena, and the climb is considered accessible. If you want to combine hiking with discovering the town, it offers a clear point of reference right in the center. Represa da Tudelândia offers a different focus: it is nearby and suitable for swimming. The climb and the swimming spot are therefore two distinct experiences that you can consider separately, or as different priorities, when planning your trip.
Hiking trails in Parque Estadual do Desengano
Parque Estadual do Desengano encompasses the municipalities of Santa Maria Madalena, Campos dos Goytacazes, and São Fidélis. The park has hiking trails of all difficulty levels. Excursions include the Circuito da Cascata, with a 70-meter-high waterfall, as well as the Trilha do Poço do Padre, Trilha da Pedra do Desengano, and Trilha da Mina trails. The waterfall is a distinctive landscape feature of the Circuito da Cascata; the other trails also have names. The park therefore offers both a notable waterfall and several named hiking routes. The park’s visitor center is located at Horto Central Florestal Santos Lima in the municipality.
Architecture, local history, and culture
The Igreja Matriz of Santa Maria Madalena dates from 1892 and was built in the French Neo-Gothic style. The historic center includes squares where monuments commemorate notable residents. Together, the church and squares offer different connections to the past: a religious building with a specific date and clearly identified architectural style, and the remembrance of residents in public spaces.
Casa da Cultura is located in a former railway station that now serves as a cultural center and event venue. The building’s former purpose and its current cultural function come together here. At the municipal level, Museu Dercy Gonçalves adds to the area’s cultural offerings: it houses personal and professional belongings of Dercy Gonçalves.
The Festa da Padroeira de Santa Maria Madalena is also part of the town’s recent event history. The program for the edition held from July 13 to 22, 2025, included religious activities, shows, sporting events, and activities for the whole family. This dated example therefore encompasses religious, cultural, and sporting aspects.
Choose the location of your vacation rental based on your plans
If climbing Pedra Dubois is important to you, you can make being in the town center a specific consideration when searching for a vacation rental. If you plan to swim, focus on the area near the reservoir; if you plan to hike in Parque Estadual do Desengano, keep in mind that the park spans three municipalities. Which of these experiences you want to shape your stay is a helpful starting point when choosing a location.
