Rio Das Ostras
Accommodation in Rio Das Ostras
Rio Das Ostras brings together coastal landscapes, protected nature and historical and cultural landmarks. Its 28 kilometers of coastline, with 15 beaches, offer an introduction to the different sides of the area; visitors will find calm waters at the beaches. There are also paths through the Atlantic Forest vegetation and places where you can discover the region’s history. Which of these aspects you want to shape your stay may also influence your choice of a vacation rental in Rio Das Ostras.
Coast and Promenade in Costazul
Costazul is a 2.3-kilometer-long ocean beach visited by surfers and people who fish from shore. If you are interested in these coastal activities, the seafront promenade offers more: it has a bike path, an outdoor gym, kiosks and playgrounds. The promenade also includes 15,000 square meters of protected restinga vegetation. This stretch of coast thus brings together exercise, leisure facilities and a protected area of vegetation.
The Píer de Costazul offers another perspective on the beach: from there, you can take in the beach’s entire seafront promenade. Praça da Baleia makes a striking impression with its 20-meter-long humpback whale sculpture. Its metal structure is clad in bronze plates and a brass alloy. The beach, promenade and sculpture appeal to different interests and give you several concrete options when planning your time on the coast.
Experience Nature and Choose Your Routes
At Parque Natural Municipal dos Pássaros, visitors can observe wildlife and vegetation typical of the Atlantic Forest along ecological trails. Environmental art exhibitions are also available at the visitor center. The park is open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with free admission. It combines nature observation with an opportunity to explore artistic approaches to the environment.
Monumento Natural dos Costões Rochosos offers a different landscape. The protected area encompasses a broad stretch of rocks and beaches between Praia da Joana and Praça da Baleia. A hiking trail in the monument passes Praia das Areias Negras and Praia Virgem. If you are interested in hiking, this route offers a specific connection to two beaches.
Praia de Itapebussus is also a destination for guests who enjoy walking: it can only be reached along the beach or via the hiking trail. This access restriction sets it apart from the beach options in Costazul and may factor into your day’s plans. At Lagoa de Iriry, meanwhile, the water stands out for its dark color, caused by the vegetation present there. Trails, kiosks and a lookout point about 20 meters high add to the experience at the lagoon.
History and Cultural Details
The Poço de Pedras do Largo de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built by enslaved people in the mid-18th century. It served as a landmark for the development of Rio Das Ostras. This history makes it an important historical site; Casa de Cultura Bento Costa Júnior is also considered one of the oldest buildings in Rio Das Ostras.
The Museu de Sítio Arqueológico Sambaqui da Tarioba is closed for maintenance. Its exhibits include an excavated area with skeletal remains, as well as jewelry, giant oysters, shells and stone tools. They illustrate settlement by an ancient civilization estimated to be about 4,000 years old. If your stay focuses on culture and history, this current closure is also relevant when planning.
The coast, nature trails and historical sites offer different ways to shape your stay. When looking for a vacation rental, consider which side of Rio Das Ostras interests you most: the beach and promenade, nature observation and hiking trails, or cultural discoveries.
