Ipiabas brings together different sides of the region: waterfalls in the Mata Atlântica, views of the forest and traces of the history of transportation and travel. A guided fazenda experience adds a look at ways of life and work in the past. This brings nature and history together, without requiring your stay to focus on just one of them.

Nature and Views

Cachoeira de Ipiabas, also known as Cachoeira da Floresta, is located in a remnant of the Mata Atlântica. The area is characterized by mountainous terrain, streams that flow year-round and forest. Toucans, woodpeckers and canaries can be spotted on the surrounding trails. The waterfall itself consists of two cascades formed by the Rio das Flores: one is approximately 3.5 meters high, and the other nearly 5 meters. They create natural pools.

Mirante de Ipiabas is a free tourist attraction offering panoramic views of the Mata Atlântica. Pedra do Gavião is considered a viewpoint with 360-degree views. Its rock face, about 100 meters high, is also noted as a place for rappelling. At Pedra do Gavião, both the sweeping views and the rock face stand out as different aspects of the same place.

Traces of Transportation and History

The Túnel da Rede Mineira de Viação was built to facilitate traffic along the Barra do Piraí–Ipiabas route and enable coffee to be transported from southern Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated in 1883, it was carved by enslaved people through a rock formation about 250 meters high. Its history thus connects a specific transportation purpose with the labor of enslaved people.

The Casarão da Antiga Remonta dates back to 1874. During long journeys, the Imperial Guard used the house to change exhausted animals—a practical function that brings the travel routines of the time to life. The Casarão, popularly known as Remonta, has been restored and is currently part of Ipiabas’s tourist and cultural route. It houses a commercial, gastronomic and cultural center; various activities for the local community and tourists have been held there in recent years.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade was built in 1850 by Capitão Mata Gente. Along with the 1874 Casarão and the tunnel inaugurated in 1883, it represents a different historical building purpose. The dates provide a clear timeline for the three sites: the church, the Casarão and the tunnel were built or inaugurated in different decades.

A Guided Fazenda Experience

At Fazenda São João da Prosperidade, the visit is designed as a guided experience. It includes a tour of the main house and a walk to the former slave quarters. Figures and African cultural expressions are presented along the way. This brings not only historic buildings into view, but also the former quarters and the cultural expressions presented there.

If you are looking for a vacation rental in Ipiabas, you can choose based on the vacation themes you’re interested in: would you like to focus on forest, waterfalls and views, or are you especially interested in historic sites and the guided experience at the fazenda? This comparison can help you get a sense of what your stay will be like in advance.
