Discover Carmo
Accommodation in Carmo
Discover Carmo through tangible traces of its history and its nature offerings: the Ladeira de Pedra, the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Carmo and the Parque Natural Municipal do Livramento each offer a different perspective. This lets you choose between historic sights and nature-based experiences for your trip.
Historic Places in Carmo
The Ladeira de Pedra was built by enslaved people towards the end of the 19th century. Since 2021, it has been recognised as municipal historic heritage. Its history gives the place a tangible connection to the past, which can also be seen in other buildings.
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Carmo was built in 1876 and designated a protected monument by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional in 1964. The Capela Nosso Senhor dos Passos is also one of Carmo’s tourist attractions. Visitors interested in historic buildings will find more than one place to visit. Praça Getúlio Vargas is in the town centre and is part of Carmo’s tourist trail.
Nature and Leisure in the Municipality
The Parque Natural Municipal do Livramento is also part of Carmo’s tourist trail and offers opportunities for ecotourism. Visitors can see the manor house and an exhibition inside. Nature and an insight into the area’s history come together here.
In the municipality of Carmo, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, sport fishing, motorboat trips, river swimming and camping are listed as leisure activities near the district of Porto Velho do Cunha, along the RJ-158 road. The options range from swimming and sport fishing to activities on the water, with camping among the other offerings. These activities are in the area near the district, not at a specific location in the town centre.
The municipality is also home to Cachoeira da Prata, on Fazenda São Lourenço. It is formed by the waters of the Rio dos Quilombos and lies on the border between Carmo and Cantagalo. This location gives the waterfall a distinct geographical setting within the municipality.
Local Products and Traditions
Cachaça da Quinta has been produced by the same family in the municipality of Carmo since 1923. The headquarters of Fazenda da Quinta and the recipe for its spirit also date back to the 19th century. The residence no longer exists; a wall and a few other structures remain and are maintained by the current owners. Visits to the facilities are reserved for companies or institutions that make an enquiry in advance and arrange an appointment. They are intended for groups of up to 15 people and are subject to availability. If you are planning such a visit, check in advance whether it is possible.
At Estação in the district of Bacelar, products under the Relógio brand are available, including cheese, Requeijão and butter. The brand has a history spanning more than 100 years. The range also includes natural and organic products such as green banana flour, honey, Goiabada, propolis and homemade biscuits. Folia de Reis is part of the cultural calendar of the municipality of Carmo. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the event dates in advance.
Choose the Right Base for Your Trip
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: historic buildings and places in the centre, or nature and leisure activities in the municipality. Compare accommodation based on the specific places you plan to visit. That way, you can choose your base according to the experiences that matter to you, rather than deciding solely on the town’s name.
