Viçosa appeals to travelers who want to explore nature and culture in different ways. The town’s character includes protected fragments of the Atlantic Forest, natural history collections and a historic house with a clearly defined architectural and preservation history. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider whether you would like to focus your trip on forests and environmental education, animal and plant collections, or architectural history. These places offer different perspectives and a range of themes to consider when planning your trip.

Forest and Environmental Education

Mata do Paraíso is an Atlantic Forest reserve. The forest fragment covers about 400 ha; the station covers 200 ha. It is in an excellent state of preservation and is home to numerous endangered animal and plant species. The area also protects the springs of Córrego Santa Catarina, an important tributary of Ribeirão São Bartolomeu. It also has trails and an environmental education center. This means that, alongside the forest, biodiversity and the protection of springs are also key themes here.

Another natural attraction is Mata da Biologia, also known as Recanto das Cigarras. This protected area is located on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. It is a species-rich fragment of the Atlantic Forest that is regenerating naturally. Interpretive activities on ecology, plants, animals and fungi can be carried out along the trails. If you are particularly interested in ecological relationships during your trip, this place offers a different focus from Viçosa’s historical and zoological collections.

Collections and Architectural History

The Museu de Zoologia João Moojen complements the nature-related themes from another perspective. It was founded in 1933 from a collection of various Brazilian fauna species belonging to João Moojen, then a professor. Today, the collection comprises more than 22,000 specimens, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals and fossils. Some are on public display, including preserved and taxidermied animals of Brazilian fauna. The collection thus brings together different animal groups with a paleontological perspective on fossils.

Casa Arthur Bernardes adds an architectural history perspective. It was built from 1922 to 1926 in the Eclectic style. Its state-level designation for protection was approved by State Decree No. 29.399 of April 21, 1989. It was entered in the Register of Historic Fine Arts and the Register of Historic Monuments, Historic Works of Art, and Palaeographic or Bibliographic Documents. If you are interested in architectural history, you can combine this visit with the natural history themes as a distinct cultural highlight of your trip.

More Insights into Nature and Communication

The Horto Botânico of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa has a collection of living native and introduced plants. The Museu da Comunicação is a memory and experimentation center of the university’s Department of Communication Studies and Journalism, located on campus and open to visitors. Both broaden the selection with botany and communication, respectively. This lets you choose the focus of your trip without reducing Viçosa to a single attraction.

If you would like to include more places in your travel plans: São José da Barra, Entre Rios De Minas, Nova Ponte, Jaguaritira, São Lourenço, Igarapé, Montalvânia and Cristiano Otoni.
