Luminárias: Waterfalls, Views and History
Accommodation in Luminárias
Luminárias offers a variety of reasons to visit: waterfalls, views, and challenging bike rides alongside the history of two churches. When planning, it is worth considering the geographical location of each destination. Some are close to town, while others are within the municipality. This way, you can decide whether water, activity, expansive views, or local history will shape your stay.
Waterfalls and Different Water Landscapes
The Complexo da Serra Grande near Luminárias comprises three waterfalls and is about eight kilometers from the town center toward Carrancas. At Cachoeira da Serra Grande, a large pool forms, with both shallow and deep areas; it also has a small, sunny sandy beach. Cachoeira da Jandira, in the same complex, is considered a place to enjoy the scenery and swim in calm water. Choosing between the waterfalls offers different highlights: a pool with varying depths and a sandy beach at Serra Grande, and calm water at Jandira.
Views and Active Exploration
Pico do Cruzeiro, also known as Serra Torre, is in the Serra Grande or Serra do Mandembe region, about eight kilometers from the center of Luminárias toward Carrancas. The viewpoint is in the same area as the Complexo da Serra Grande; from there, you can watch the sunrise and sunset. The road there is signposted. Check road conditions before setting out, as they can change.
You can also discover an active side of Luminárias by bike: the cycling routes follow unpaved roads and include challenging climbs as well as expansive views. This makes them a distinct option alongside the waterfalls and viewpoints. If you include the routes in your plans, bear in mind the described climbs and check road conditions in advance.
Another viewpoint is in the municipality of Luminárias: Pico do Gavião reaches approximately 1,500 meters in elevation and offers a 360-degree panorama. The two viewpoints have distinct highlights: Pico do Cruzeiro is known for sunrise and sunset views, while Pico do Gavião stands out for its approximate elevation and panoramic views across the region.
Church History in Luminárias
Construction of Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Carmo began around 1942. A different story is associated with Capela do Carmo, also known as Igreja Velha. It is located in Luminárias on the grounds of the former farm of matriarch Maria José do Espirito Santo. In the 18th century, she donated part of her farm for the construction of the chapel. The two churches thus offer different historical reference points: the approximate start of construction of the Matriz and the founding story of the Capela.
When looking for a vacation rental, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: church and local history in Luminárias, nearby waterfalls, or viewpoints and challenging bike rides.
