Caeté brings together protected cultural sites and a history closely tied to the landscape of Minas Gerais. There is also the Rota do Ferro: an approximately 80-kilometre route connecting Caeté with other towns and intended for non-motorised activities. Those who choose Caeté for their holiday can focus on different things, from the historic town centre to a longer tour.

Cultural Sites and History in Caeté

In Sede, the Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso has been listed as state-protected cultural heritage since 13 June 1938. It is part of the listing with process number 67-T-38 and entry number 115 in the Livro Belas Artes. The historic town centre of Caeté in Sede is also protected: this is based on Municipal Decree No. 202 of 17 November 2011. The church and the town centre thus offer two different starting points for exploring the city’s cultural heritage.

Another facet is the landscape, artistic and cultural ensemble of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Piedade. It is designated a tourist attraction of particular importance in the Município Caeté in Minas Gerais. Serra da Piedade, in turn, is closely linked to the history of the Bandeirantes and the settlement of the territory of Minas Gerais associated with them. As one of the region’s most important landmarks, it adds a historical and landscape context to the picture of Caeté.

Crafts and Educational Activities

The Museu Regional de Caeté is dedicated to the cultural heritage, knowledge and craft traditions of the people of Caeté and its districts. The museum develops educational activities to meet the needs of the Município and the region, with particular attention to students from the city and surrounding area. The sharing of knowledge and preservation of regional traditions are therefore among the themes associated with the museum.

Activities at the Museu Regional de Caeté include courses and workshops on traditional craft techniques from the region. Together with its educational activities, these offer a distinct way to explore cultural history: the focus is not only on buildings and protected areas of the town, but also on craft knowledge and local traditions. If culture is your main interest during your trip, the Igreja Matriz, the historic town centre and the topics associated with the museum offer various starting points.

The Rota do Ferro: a Route Without Motorised Traffic

The Rota do Ferro starts in Sabará, passes through Caeté and Barão de Cocais, and ends in Santa Bárbara. It is approximately 80 kilometres long. The route follows the former, now-disused Ramal Nova Era (EFSSB) railway line and is intended exclusively for cycling, horse riding, walking or trail running, as well as other non-motorised sports. This restriction shapes how the route can be used: motorised activities are not among its intended uses.

Along the way are ruins, including abandoned railway stations, parts of former structures and small tunnels. The former railway line and these structural remains give the route a historical connection that differs from the protected cultural sites in Sede. At the same time, Caeté is just one section of a longer route between several towns. When planning your holiday, it is therefore helpful to distinguish clearly between two options: are you primarily interested in the city’s cultural sites and traditions, or would you like to experience Caeté as part of a non-motorised route?

These different interests can also guide your search for a holiday apartment in Caeté. Those mainly interested in local history, cultural heritage and regional craft traditions will plan with a different focus from those drawn to the Rota do Ferro. The route continues beyond Caeté; its stated endpoints are Sabará and Santa Bárbara. You can choose your destination based on the cultural or active experience you want, without treating the two as the same.

If you would like to explore other town pages in addition to Caeté: Taparuba, São José da Barra, São João Del Rei, Sete Lagoas, Santa Rita Do Sapucaí, Itabirito, Carmo Do Rio Claro and Jaguaritira.
