Catalão is especially shaped by the Congada: it has been held in the city since 1876, and every year in the first half of October, Congadas set the pace during the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, this period gives you a specific point of reference. The Congada connects the city’s yearly rhythm with a cultural experience that is also reflected in individual places around Catalão.

Congada and Places of Remembrance

An important meeting place for the groups is Largo do Rosário in the center of Catalão. They gather there for the pilgrims’ procession, the Sunday night procession and the handover of the crown. These different occasions show that the Congada is not associated with just one procession, but with several moments in the celebration. This offers a way to give your trip a particular focus: if you mainly want to learn about the festival tradition, you can consider visiting Catalão in the first half of October.

The Museu Histórico Municipal Cornélio Ramos preserves and presents the city’s social and artistic memory. Its extensive collection includes documents, photographs, paintings, sculptures, handicrafts, artifacts and other objects that document Catalão’s history. The museum therefore offers several ways to explore the city’s past: documents and images sit alongside works of art and objects. It is housed in a former railway station, which was protected as part of Catalão’s cultural heritage in 2001.

The Congada, too, has recognized cultural and historical significance: the inclusion of Catalão’s Congadas in the Livro dos Saberes of the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) was unanimously approved. Another protected place is Morro da Saudade, also known as Colina dos Poetas. In 1994, it and the chapel were protected as part of Catalão’s historical heritage. These aspects add tradition, collection history and protected places to the picture of the city.

Nature Themes and Other Impressions

Parque Paquetá presents another side of the city. A course there combined sport with direct contact with nature. The environmental trail covered a 6 km route and was intended to raise awareness about protecting the local ecosystem. At one event, children took part in a walk in Parque Paquetá to conclude the activity. The experience offered practical learning and contact with nature, and prompted reflection on protecting natural areas. Thus, alongside festival culture and city history, Catalão also offers nature experiences and environmental themes.

Tents for food trucks and vendor stalls are planned for Feira Parque. This describes another, separate use of the site alongside its cultural and nature-related themes. Parque Ecológico Severo Gomides Neto is also under construction. It is planned to include three levels of water features, covering a total of 43,487 m². The water features are therefore among the planned characteristics of the site; they should be understood as part of a project under construction.

When choosing a vacation apartment or house in Catalão, you can start by asking which aspect of the city matters most for your trip: the Congada and its October dates, the city museum’s collection, protected places or nature themes such as activities at Parque Paquetá. These interests can help guide your search, without assuming that one reason for travel applies to every stay. If you want to consider both cultural impressions and nature themes, you can keep both in mind when planning your stay.

If you would like to explore other places, you can also visit Niquelândia, João Alves, Luziânia, Nerópolis, Porangatu, Rio Verde, Cavalcante and Cocalzinho De Goiás.
