Cachoeira Alta offers two distinct strands to explore: the water-rich landscape of the Serra de Cachoeira Alta and a local history that can be told through the Ribeirão Cachoeira Alta and Nossa Senhora da Abadia. When planning a trip, you can consider nature and history as separate focal points. This creates a concrete picture of the place without reducing it to a single experience.

From River to Settlement

In 1876, Manoel Batista Barroso and Gabriel Paula do Amaral settled on the right bank of the Ribeirão Cachoeira Alta, five kilometres upstream from Barra do Rio Claro. The year after the first settlement, several families from Minas Gerais arrived and expanded the settlement core. The village of Cachoeira Alta was named after the nearby Ribeirão Cachoeira Alta. Cachoeira Alta grew up around the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Abadia.

This gives the local history several clear points of reference: the river, the first settlers, the arrival of more families and the chapel. For a trip with children, this can provide an easy-to-follow narrative: how did a settlement core grow out of an initial settlement, and what role did the chapel play in the place’s beginnings? The names and milestones give the story a concrete shape instead of reducing it to a single year.

Streams and Waterfalls in the Serra

This makes the Serra a distinct natural theme: waterways and waterfalls shape the landscape description and give the nature theme a concrete image. If you are especially interested in landscapes and water, these features can help define the character you want for your trip.

Church, Old Town and Festival Traditions

The old town of Cachoeira Alta grew up around the church of Nossa Senhora da Abadia. A 2002 account placed the oldest houses and the town library at the time in the area around the church. The church grounds are therefore a point of reference where local history and the historical description of the old town come together.

The same historical account listed the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Abadia among the city’s most important festivals. The patron saint was honoured around the church with processions, Masses and religious celebrations. A 2002 account also described the Festa do Peão as an eagerly anticipated annual festival featuring rodeos, skill games, tournaments and shows. The two accounts represent different sides of festival life at the time: religious celebrations on the one hand, rodeos and other events on the other.

Choose the Right Base for Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Cachoeira Alta, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: the landscape of the Serra or the history surrounding Nossa Senhora da Abadia. These are different areas of interest, not a ranking. If you are travelling with children, the sequence of the river’s name, the beginnings of the settlement and the chapel can provide a shared conversation thread; those mainly seeking nature may focus more on the streams and waterfalls described here.
