The municipality of Vargem Alta offers a variety of travel highlights: waterfalls, birdwatching and traces of history. When planning your trip, it’s worth checking the place names, as several attractions are located in named districts or communities rather than just in the municipal seat. This makes it easier to choose nature and cultural experiences based on your interests.

Historical Sites in Vargem Alta

The Historical and Religious Route of Vargem Alta passes through the municipal seat and the districts of Jaciguá and Boa Esperança; it includes centuries-old manor houses. The route therefore covers historic homes and several named parts of the municipality. Visitors interested in architectural and religious history will find a specific theme to guide their choice of attractions.

The Colégio Salesiano in Boa Esperança tells its own story of education. Built in the early 20th century, it housed the first educational institution in the municipality of Vargem Alta for more than 60 years. After serving as an educational institution, it hosted religious gatherings; later, the building was repurposed as a technical education center. Its succession of uses makes the building a distinctive subject of cultural history within the municipality.

Waterfalls and Nature in the Municipality

Cachoeira do Caiado is located in the community of Guiomar. Its features include a natural waterfall, a lake with crystal-clear water and a forest trail. Access is via the ES 375 road between Vargem Alta and Iconha. Parque Natural Municipal Cachoeira do Caiado was also established in Guiomar. The waterfall and protected area are therefore both located in the named community, although they represent different aspects of the nature experience.

Another point of comparison is Cachoeira do Brother: at approximately 40 m high, it is the tallest waterfall in the municipality of Vargem Alta. It also has a swimming pool and a picnic and sunbathing area. The two waterfalls offer different highlights: Cachoeira do Caiado is described in terms of its lake and forest trail, while Cachoeira do Brother is distinguished by its approximate height and the areas mentioned. This can help you choose between the attractions based on what you’re looking for.

There are also specific places to visit for birdwatching. In the district of Castelinho, the Mata de Caetés region and RPPN Monte Verde are considered suitable spots thanks to their great variety of birds. Parque Estadual Saíra-Apunhalada is also located in the municipality of Vargem Alta. This strictly protected area covers 234.667 hectares and complements the individual waterfall attractions with a broader nature conservation perspective.

Regional Cuisine and Choosing the Right Location

Sítio Casa da Mata in Alto Castelinho is 32 km from the municipal seat. Tastings and sales of homemade products are offered there, including cheese, ricotta, juice and grape jelly. Since you should check whether the offerings are currently available before your trip, it’s a good idea to enquire before you arrive. The municipality is also part of the Rota dos Vales e do Café, which includes Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Muqui and Mimoso do Sul.

When choosing a vacation rental, you can match your planned activities to their locations: the municipal seat, Jaciguá and Boa Esperança are reference points on the cultural route; Guiomar and Castelinho offer different nature and birdwatching experiences. Casa da Mata provides another reference point for planning where to stay, with its stated distance of 32 km from the municipal seat.
