Cariacica can be explored from two different perspectives: the historic sites in Cariacica-Sede tell the story of municipal life, railway history and church history. Nature and activity offerings are described in some cases at the level of the Município Cariacica. So, if you are looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first consider which themes you want to shape your stay.

History in Cariacica-Sede

The Centro Histórico Eduartino Silva was formerly home to Cariacica’s city council and mayor’s office. The Estação Ferroviária de Cariacica is also part of the administrative centre’s history: it was inaugurated in 1904 together with the Estrada de Ferro Vitória-Minas and is located in the seat of the Município Cariacica. The two sites point to different aspects of local history—municipal institutions and the railway.

The Igreja São João Batista adds church architecture to this historical focus. It was the first church built in Cariacica. Construction began in 1849 under the direction of the Italian friar Ubaldo Civitela Di Trento and was completed in 1851. These dates give your visit a specific historical context: the church was built in the mid-19th century, while the railway station was inaugurated later.

Passion play in the church square

Every year, residents perform the Encenações da Paixão de Cristo in Cariacica-Sede. The event takes place in Praça Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca, in front of Igreja Matriz de São João Batista. The annual performance is therefore linked to a specifically named square and church. If you would like to include the performance in your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.

The Passion play offers a different way to experience local culture than the history of the buildings: the focus here is on a performance put on by residents each year. Together with the historic sites, it makes for an itinerary suited to travellers interested in church history and religious performances.

Nature and activities across the municipality

There are also different attractions beyond the historic sites. Parque Natural Municipal do Monte Mochuara is considered a natural tourist attraction in Cariacica and is located in the municipality’s rural area. Parque Natural Municipal Manguezais do Itanguá offers environmental education, nature-based recreation and ecotourism. There is no infrastructure for supervised visits there—a key limitation to bear in mind if you are considering a visit.

Three routes for cycle tourism have been mapped in the Município Cariacica. Rampa de Voo Livre de Roda D’Água is for paragliding and other free-flight sports: the private ramp is 660 metres long and is located in the mountainous rural area of Roda D’Água. Access is by prior arrangement. These activities differ from the historic sites in Cariacica-Sede, so tailor your choice to the activities you actually plan to do.

Choose the right focus for your trip

When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth first considering the kind of stay you want: would you like to focus on the history of Cariacica-Sede, or are you more interested in nature, cycle tourism or flying sports across the municipality? The sites and activities are in different locations and have different conditions.
