Viçosa do Ceará invites you to include historic sites and impressive natural attractions in your travel plans. From Igreja Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, also known as Igreja do Céu, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city. Nearby, you’ll also find natural attractions such as Pedra do Itagurussu and Lagoa Pedro II. If you’re planning a family trip, you can decide together whether to focus your holiday on churches and history, a hike, or water and scenery.

Churches, History and a Special Reading Room

Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção is the oldest church in the state of Ceará. Jesuits built it between 1691 and 1700. The church is home to the Memorial Pe. Antônio Vieira S.J., a place suited to historical research. This means you can combine a visit to the church with an interest in regional history.

Another place of interest for culture lovers is the Gabinete Viçosense de Leitura. It was inaugurated on 13 May 1920 and had an important bibliographic collection. The Gabinete Viçosense de Leitura is therefore a destination for anyone who wants to discover Viçosa do Ceará’s cultural history as well as its landscapes.

Sobrado da Marcela was built in 1890 in the centre of Viçosa do Ceará and was inherited by Marcela Fontenele. After it was included in the historic site of Viçosa do Ceará, which has been protected since 2003, it was restored by IPHAN. The building adds another chapter to the town’s history alongside its churches and reading room.

Local Products and an Old House

Casa dos Licores, in the centre of Viçosa do Ceará, sells sweets, liqueurs, preserves and petas. Visitors can sample the products and explore the old house. Antique furniture and wood-fired ovens are among the features of the site. If you enjoy trying local produce while travelling, you’ll find a tangible insight here into another side of the town beyond its historic churches and buildings.

A Grotto, a Lagoon and Nature Trails

Pedra do Itagurussu lies east of Viçosa do Ceará, nearby. This historic grotto is 100 metres wide and sits between steep ravines and dense forest. It has two levels. Climbing skills are required to visit the upper chamber. Before taking a group trip, check that everyone interested has the necessary climbing skills.

Lagoa Pedro II is also nearby, south of Viçosa do Ceará. The natural lagoon is considered a tourist attraction and a landmark of the town. Bica do Itacaranha, a waterfall with crystal-clear water, is also located within Viçosa do Ceará. Visitors can cool off in the clear water there. If you’d like to consider a range of nature experiences during your stay, you can include these destinations alongside the historic sights.

For some exercise, Pedra do Machado offers an easy hiking trail. This is a different way to spend your trip from visiting the lagoon or waterfall. You can weigh up the different options according to your interests, without committing to a specific route or order.
