Maracanaú: Lagoons, Literature and Festival Traditions
Accommodation in Maracanaú
A large events park, an iconic lagoon and a procession held on a set date give Maracanaú a multifaceted character. Literature, theatre and the Festa de Santo Antônio do Pitaguary are also among the topics through which visitors can discover the town. This gives you a range of different focuses to consider when planning your trip: religious tradition, culture or the importance of water to the community.
Events Park and Lagoa de Maracanaú
Parque de Eventos Narciso Pessoa de Araújo opened in 2024 in the Distrito Industrial, on Av. Wilson Camurça. The site covers 80,000 square metres and has drainage and paving made of interlocking pavers.
Lagoa de Maracanaú is considered one of the municipality’s most important and iconic water resources. It was also one of five bodies of water assessed for a municipal bathing-water bulletin. The bulletin was intended to provide the public with information on bathing and recreational conditions. The lagoon therefore represents both its importance as a water resource and the municipality’s interest in how its waters are used.
The Cidade Viva Territórios programme at the lagoon included leisure, social and well-being activities. It also marked the municipality’s first powerboat circuit. Those interested in water and leisure activities can discover a different side of Maracanaú at the lagoon than through the stories associated with theatre, literature and religious festivals.
Literature, Theatre and a Preserved House
The novelist wrote some of his books at Casa Rodolfo Teófilo in Pajuçara. They depict drought in northeastern Brazil and people affected by drought. The house’s literary connection thus leads to a specific regional issue: the effects of drought on people. The city administration regularly maintains Casa Rodolfo Teófilo. In 2007, the Conselho Estadual de Preservação do Patrimônio Cultural do Estado do Ceará (COEPA) listed the building as a protected heritage site under Law No. 1.189/2007.
The area around Casa Rodolfo Teófilo has also been upgraded. It includes an accessible ramp and accessible toilets, benches, landscaping, lighting, tactile paving and a bicycle rack. These features are in the area surrounding the house.
Teatro Dorian Sampaio is a public theatre located within the Centro Cultural Dorian Sampaio in central Maracanaú. Through the “Teatro Dorian de Portas Abertas” project, local artists can use the theatre free of charge once a month for artistic performances. The project provides a platform for local art, complementing the literary perspective with a stage and the opportunity for artistic presentations.
Festival Traditions and Religious Sites
The Festa de Santo Antônio do Pitaguary is held annually in Maracanaú and is considered a festival of outstanding ethnocultural, ethnotouristic and religious significance. The procession and Mass in honour of Saint Anthony always take place on 13 June. The procession starts at Igreja Matriz de São José on Praça da Estação, passes through the streets and avenues of Maracanaú, and ends at Igreja de Santo Antônio do Pitaguary. The fixed date is an important distinction when planning your trip, compared with topics such as literature and local history that can be explored year-round.
The origins of Igreja de Santo Antônio do Pitaguary are associated with the discovery of an image of Saint Anthony in a hole in the Território Indígena Pitaguary. The church was built at this site as a place of faith and worship. This festival tradition and the church’s origin story each offer a distinct connection to the religious side of Maracanaú: one is an annual event with a set route, the other a church history linked to a specific discovery.
