Acaraú brings together historic architecture in town with beaches and water-shaped landscapes across the municipality. These two perspectives can help you decide what to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore the buildings and market in the town centre, or are you more interested in coastal communities, fishing and mangroves? If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, this distinction can help you choose a suitable base.

Architecture and urban life

Casa Padre Antonio Tomás stands on Rua dos Poetas. Built in the mid-19th century, it now houses a small handicraft centre. Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia was built in 1922 and still has its original wooden floor. Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Acaraú was built between 1943 and 1947; its main tower is 45 metres high.

Together, these three buildings offer different ways to explore Acaraú’s heritage: a building with a handicraft centre, an original architectural feature and the height of a church tower. For travellers interested in culture, architecture becomes tangible through specific details, not just dates.

The Mercado Público de Acaraú is also in the town centre, at Praça do Centenário. A place for trade and leisure, it complements the buildings by offering a glimpse of commerce and recreation in urban life.

Coastal communities and landscapes across the municipality

The coastline takes different forms across the municipality. At Praia de Coroa Grande, river, marine and mangrove landscapes meet; the water is calm, dark and greenish in colour. Praia do Espraiado, in the eastern part of the municipality, is home to a fishing community, and coconut palms shape the beach landscape. At Praia de Volta do Rio, a community makes its living from artisanal fishing; the beach is in the municipality of Acaraú, in the state of Ceará, on the border with Itarema.

During the rainy season, clear water gathers among the dunes at Praia da Barrinha, forming natural bathing pools. Whether they form depends on rainfall and local conditions. A state-led beach urbanisation project at Praia de Arpoeiras included 11 kiosks; it was reported on 30 December 2020. If you’re including this infrastructure in your plans, check its current condition locally.

The coastal communities offer different themes to consider when planning your trip: fishing and coconut palms at Espraiado, mangroves at Coroa Grande and seasonal dune pools at Barrinha. If you’re travelling with children, you could plan around the landscapes and local ways of life you’d like to discover together.

Plan your dates and journey

The traditional Regata de São José took place on 19 March at the beaches of Barrinha de Baixo and Volta do Rio. It was the 22nd edition at Barrinha de Baixo and the 15th at Volta do Rio. If you’d like to plan your trip around the regatta, check the current event dates.

From Fortaleza, you can reach Acaraú via the Rodovia Estruturante CE-085 or the BR-222. Check road conditions before setting out. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it’s worth deciding first what you’d like to focus on: architecture and the Mercado Público in town, or coastal landscapes and fishing communities across the municipality. Then factor the accommodation’s exact location into your plans.
