São Félix combines the landscape along the Rio Paraguaçu with a historic townscape shaped by buildings from several centuries. The architectural, urban-planning, and landscape ensemble was designated a heritage site by IPHAN in 2010. If you want to make culture and urban history the focus of your trip, São Félix offers plenty of specific themes to guide your choice of holiday apartment.

Colonial Buildings and Two 18th-Century Churches

The architecture of São Félix includes colonial buildings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. This time span makes different historical building periods a theme of your stay: instead of looking at individual buildings alone, you can also consider how the built heritage spans several centuries. The largely preserved original urban layout is also part of this historic character.

Two churches make their own architectural statements. The Igreja da Matriz de Deus Menino has a characteristically Rococo-style façade and was built in the late 18th century. The Igreja do Senhor São Félix, also built in the late 18th century, features an imitation of European Renaissance art. Families who want to explore architecture together can compare the two churches through their different stylistic influences. This draws attention to both the façades and their historical models.

River, Urban Layout, and Connection to Cachoeira

The Rio Paraguaçu is part of the landscape of São Félix. The riverfront area is also part of the historic urban layout. Other elements include the route of the railway line to the former railway station. These features help you understand the protected relationship between the town, the riverfront, and historical development as a theme of your trip; the railway line and former station are explicitly part of the historic layout.

The Ponte Dom Pedro II has connected São Félix and Cachoeira for more than a century. The connection between the two towns is therefore another defining fact to bear in mind. If you are interested in the history of towns and their connections, you can make the bridge a theme in its own right as you explore São Félix, without treating it as one of the individual historic buildings.

Cultural Heritage Site and Museum Estate

The Casa da Cultura is one of São Félix’s protected monuments and public spaces. It adds another part of the protected cultural heritage alongside the churches and colonial buildings. Fazenda Santa Bárbara is another prominent name in the town: the estate was later opened to the public as Museu Hansen Bahia. It covers a total of 25 hectares, of which 6.2 hectares are used by the museum. The difference between the estate’s total area and the portion used by the museum gives the museum site a concrete sense of scale.

A holiday apartment in São Félix is a good search option if you want to focus your stay on the town’s cultural history. Those travelling with children can choose the centuries-old building periods, the different church façades, and the connection to the river as different starting points for exploring together.
