Santo Estêvão: Festivals, Culture and the Rio Paraguaçu
Accommodation in Santo Estêvão
In Santo Estêvão, long-standing festivals meet cultural venues and experiences on the Rio Paraguaçu. The Micareta is part of the municipality’s cultural identity; activities on the water include boat trips and watersports. Lakes, a viewpoint and local markets also add to the range of things to discover. Santo Estêvão is part of the Caminhos do Sertão tourism zone.
June Festivals and Cultural Venues
The São João de Santo Estêvão festival takes place in June around Praça Sete de Setembro. Pre-São João festivities begin at the start of the month. The festival also includes a gathering of folk groups that perform June festival traditions, with groups from several municipalities in Bahia taking part. During the June festivities, Boi Janeiro, a form of Bumba-meu-boi, is performed at Cruzeiro do Monte. The Micareta is considered one of the municipality’s longest-standing festivals and part of its cultural identity; Arraiá da Modesto Gusmão is described as one of Santo Estêvão’s longest-standing June festivals.
Praça Sete de Setembro was built in 1924 by municipal administrator Temístocles Pires de Cerqueira and is now a venue for major community festivals. The Centro Cultural Temístocles Pires de Cerqueira houses the city museum, also known as the city memorial. The cultural centre offers exhibitions on culture and art, talks, conferences, courses and other cultural events. A programme titled Agosto das Culturas Tradicionais e Populares featured cultural performances, workshops, cinema and a crafts fair on 27 and 28 August. Literature and artistic expression take centre stage at FLISE, the Festa Literária de Santo Estêvão, on the festival calendar.
The Igreja Matriz is the city’s main Catholic church and the setting for major religious events. These include the patron saint festival with a procession, a Via-Sacra performance during Holy Week and the harvest festival. Visitors interested in religious traditions and local culture will find these, alongside the festivities around the square, among the defining aspects of a stay.
Lakes, Views and Activities on the River
Lagoa de Plínio is considered a local attraction and landmark of Santo Estêvão, and is associated with outdoor recreation. It has a children’s playground and a running track. Lagoa de Santana is also considered a landmark of Santo Estêvão and is associated with a range of sports and leisure activities.
Porto Castro Alves lies on the banks of the Rio Paraguaçu. The river is used there for watersports, boat trips and jet ski gatherings. Santo Estêvão also hosted a stage of the Campeonato Baiano de Águas Abertas for the first time, with the 7th stage’s competitions taking place in Lake Pedra do Cavalo at Porto Castro Alves. In 2023, Santo Estêvão was also considered as a venue for the Circuito do Campeonato Baiano de Canoagem Velocidade e Paracanoagem. At Cruzeiro do Monte, in the higher part of the city, a viewpoint overlooks the Riacho do Salgado, which is described as the place where Santo Estêvão originated. Casa do Poeta at Porto Castro Alves has been preserved.
