Porto Seguro – Cidade Alta, History and Coral Reefs
Accommodation in Porto Seguro
Porto Seguro offers a range of themes for a trip: Cidade Alta and the Centro Histórico tell the story of a protected colonial-era streetscape and collection of houses. The Parque Natural Municipal Marinho Recife de Fora, meanwhile, offers a glimpse of coral reef biodiversity. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether the city’s history and monuments or its marine environment should play a greater role in your stay.
History in Cidade Alta
The architectural and landscape ensemble of Cidade Alta was listed by IPHAN in 1968. The entire historic site of Porto Seguro is also protected as a heritage site. The Centro Histórico is part of a protected colonial-era streetscape and collection of houses. These features give the city’s historic side a clear focus: its architecture and urban space together form part of its cultural heritage.
A distinctive landmark in Cidade Alta is the Marco do Descobrimento. It stands in a square, facing the sea. The rectangular stone marker is about 1.50 metres high; on opposite sides, it bears the coat of arms of Portugal and the Cross of Christ. Visitors interested in the area’s history can see these two symbols on the same monument.
The Marco stands on a slightly raised platform, is enclosed by a glass dome and has four access ramps. These architectural details are part of its design, along with the shape and symbols on the stone. Cidade Alta is also home to Igreja da Pena, one of the seven Catholic churches that form part of Porto Seguro’s cultural heritage.
Landmarks and exhibitions
The century-old Gameleira is an iconic landmark of Cidade Histórica and part of the history and identity of Porto Seguro’s historic area. It adds another point of interest when exploring the city’s history: a tree regarded as a defining symbol of the historic area. Families can explore different questions, such as which buildings form part of the religious heritage and what role a landmark plays in a place’s identity.
The Memorial da Epopeia do Descobrimento presents a collection about the discovery of Brazil, the Age of Exploration and Indigenous peoples. Highlights include a faithful replica of a ship from Pedro Álvares Cabral’s fleet. The collection and ship model offer different points of discussion: you can consider the themes of seafaring alongside the presentation of Indigenous peoples and talk about the different perspectives brought together in a collection of this kind.
Coral reefs as another travel theme
Nature also shapes Porto Seguro. As part of an environmental education programme, students visited the Piscina de Visitação in Parque Natural Municipal Marinho Recife de Fora. During a lesson accompanied by the park’s technical team and UFSB interns, they observed the biodiversity of the coral reefs there. This is a distinct focus to consider when planning your trip, alongside the historic sites.
If you are travelling with children, you can weigh these themes according to your family’s interests: the symbols and monuments of Cidade Alta, the exhibits at the Memorial or coral reef biodiversity as featured in the environmental education programme. When looking for a holiday apartment, this distinction can help you decide what kind of trip you want—one focused more on culture and history or one with a particular interest in marine nature.
