Morro do Chapéu: Culture, Wineries and Rock Landscapes
Accommodation in Morro do Chapéu
Morro do Chapéu is located in the Chapada Diamantina and brings together historic local culture, wineries and impressive geological formations. In the centre, squares, historic houses and a chapel tell the story of the town’s built heritage; in the municipality, winery visits and rock landscapes offer further themes for your trip. This blend of culture and nature can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Culture in the centre and across the municipality
The centre is home to historic mansions, squares and the Igreja Matriz. Also centrally located is the Capela Nossa Senhora da Soledade, which dates back to 1911. The municipality also has a town hall building from the 19th century. These traces from different periods give you a tangible starting point for exploring the area’s culture, without limiting you to a single building.
The municipality’s musical history includes two filarmônicas; the Filarmônica Minerva was founded in 1906. A declaration published on 20 May 2025 recognised the festivals of Divino Espírito Santo and São Benedito as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality. A procession in honour of both saints passes through the streets of Morro do Chapéu. Traditional crafts also have a distinctive connection to the place: Fuxico, made from fabric scraps and featuring motifs from the local flora, is considered the craft most closely associated with Morro do Chapéu.
The area of Vila do Ventura is also part of the municipality’s cultural heritage: it has archaeological sites with rock paintings, listed on the Archaeological Routes of the Chapada Diamantina. These sites add archaeological evidence to your understanding of the municipality, while the squares and chapel in the centre reflect the town’s built history.
Winery visits and things to do
In the municipality, Vinícola Sertania offers a guided tour that introduces visitors to the winery. The tour explains the production process, agricultural production and the wine cellar. At Vinícola Santa Maria, the tour is led by team members or relatives of the founding family and ends with a tasting of two selected wines. The experiences differ: Sertania focuses on insights into the winery and production, while Santa Maria includes a tasting at the end.
As a provider of guided tourist experiences, As Meninas do Turismo operates in Morro do Chapéu. The owners, Carol and Marina, describe themselves as explorers of adventures and hiking trails.
Rock formations and nature around Morro do Chapéu
Morrão is a mesa formation with horizontal layers and hardened sandstone at its summit. It is considered the highest point in the region; from the summit, you can look out over the surrounding plain. The municipal government identifies Morrão as a tourist attraction. In a report dated 17 July 2025, it announced that signs had been installed there to provide orientation and environmental education, informing visitors about the region’s natural and cultural heritage and highlighting it.
Another geological formation in the vicinity of the destination is Buraco do Possidônio: a huge cylindrical collapse sinkhole in the siltstones of the Formação Caboclo. It formed when a large underground cavity collapsed. Cachoeira do Ferro Doido is also in the wider area around Morro do Chapéu and within the Monumento Natural da Cachoeira do Ferro Doido protected area. Together with the layers described at Morrão, these places show the variety of geological features in the region.
There is also an unusual detail in the townscape: a report from 2022 describes the unveiling of a replica of a flying saucer on Praça Porto Cristal. Built as a tribute to UFOs, the replica is 6.8 metres in diameter and weighs about 40 tonnes. This example adds an unexpected note alongside the historic and geological themes.
Getting oriented and choosing your holiday rental
The Centro de Atendimento ao Turista (CAT), at Rua Coronel Dias Coelho 188 in the centre, provides residents and visitors with information and guidance about the municipality’s attractions, culture, events and services. The municipal announcement about it was published on 9 March 2026. If you plan to use the CAT to help with your preparations, check the service information before your visit.
When looking for a holiday rental, it is worth first deciding what you want your days to include: would you like to focus on culture in the centre, are you particularly interested in the geological formations, or would you like to plan winery visits? This way, your choice will reflect your travel group’s interests rather than being based on an assumed ideal starting point.
