Itaparica brings together a protected historic district, stories about mineral water and a fort on the seafront. In the north of the island, the protected central area lies close to the sea. Its irregularly laid-out streets and squares give it a distinctive structure; many single-storey buildings define the district, which has retained its original features despite changes over the years.

A protected historic centre with its own distinctive structure

In 1980, Iphan listed Itaparica’s architectural, urban and landscape ensemble as a heritage site. Anyone interested in architectural history and urban design will find more than individual historic buildings here: the protected area also includes the layout of the streets, the squares between them and the surrounding landscape. The many single-storey houses create a different scale from a city skyline dominated by tall buildings.

The ensemble includes the Igreja Matriz do Santíssimo Sacramento, the Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Fonte da Bica is also among Itaparica’s protected monuments and public spaces. These examples show that the protected heritage encompasses both buildings and public places. If you are travelling with your family, you can consider whether these historic and urban-design features should shape your holiday—or whether other aspects of the place matter more to you.

Fonte da Bica and the mineral water tradition

Fonte da Bica is a mineral water supply point; its water is marketed throughout the country. In 1919, Itaparica received the title of Estância Hidromineral, or mineral spa resort. Together, these make mineral water a distinctive part of the town’s history and add another dimension to the churches and protected buildings. When planning your holiday, this connection can be a reason to discover Itaparica not only for its seaside location, but also for its mineral water tradition.

Forte de São Lourenço on the seafront

Forte de São Lourenço offers a different perspective: it stands on the seafront beside a small beach lined with lush tamarind trees. The fort is also part of the history of the independence struggles. In 1823, it played an important role during several attacks. Here, a distinct coastal landscape and a historical context meet—contrasting with the focus on streets, squares and single-storey buildings in the protected central area.

The Igreja de São Lourenço is a separate building. It is believed to have been built in 1610. Together with the Igreja Matriz do Santíssimo Sacramento, it is a reason to pay attention to the different names and historical connections when exploring Itaparica’s religious heritage.

The town centre, ferry landing and travel interests

The protected central area includes a boat landing where boats and motorboats dock. In addition, the Sobrado Tenente Brotas was adapted more recently for use as a Centro de Turismo, or tourism centre. These places add a boat landing and a historic building with a more recent intended use to the picture of the central area.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide which themes you would particularly like to explore during your time in Itaparica: the protected townscape, the mineral water tradition, or the fort’s history and coastal setting. This lets you choose a holiday location that suits your interests without reducing Itaparica to just one of its many facets.

One time-specific example of an event is the regatta of the Festival Náutico Maria Felipa: on 11 July 2026, it ran to the Base Náutica de Itaparica, where the awards ceremony took place.
