The Igreja Matriz is considered a landmark of Catu’s cultural and religious heritage. The town also offers a variety of cultural themes: local programs feature theater, dance, art, literature and food. If you are planning a trip where local culture is as interesting as choosing where to stay, you can get to know Catu through these different aspects.

Catu between Salvador and Alagoinhas

Catu is located on the BR-110 between Salvador and Alagoinhas. This provides a clear geographic reference point when you are including Catu in your travel plans or comparing the towns along this route. When looking for a vacation rental, the first question is whether Catu itself is one of the places you want to explore. The town’s cultural landmarks provide specific points of reference, without requiring you to plan your trip around a single event date.

With the Igreja Matriz, Catu has a distinctive landmark of its cultural and religious heritage. If you are interested in religious architecture and the cultural character of a town, you can make it a focus of your travel plans. This landmark offers a different perspective from time-limited programs: it represents the town’s heritage, while events showcase different forms of cultural life.

Culture from theater to literature

In 2025, the Casa da Cultura in Catu offered free classes in theater for adults and children, capoeira, dance, ballroom dancing, ballet and jazz. The range spans the performing arts and movement, as well as different forms of dance. The theater classes were specifically aimed at adults and children. Cultural and arts workshops announced for 2025 by the Casa da Cultura were also open to people of all ages.

Another program, FLICKIDSCATU at Parque Municipal de Leitura, included a storytelling event and several art workshops: canvas painting, mask-making and body drawing. It also featured a presentation of the book Quinca no Mundo da Lua. A separate item was also planned as part of the park’s inauguration. In this format, literature, storytelling and hands-on artistic activities came together.

Larger cultural events are also among the examples of Catu’s cultural life. The Virada Cultural de Catu was announced for February 6, 7 and 8, 2024. The program was set to include music, theater, dance, exhibitions, artistic interventions and a film showcase: a total of 30 hours of programming across several stages.

Literature, tradition and local products

The 1st Feira Literária Catuense – FLICATU was scheduled to take place in Catu on December 5 and 6, 2025. Its planned program brought together literary, artistic, educational and musical content. This gave it a different focus from the Casa da Cultura workshops and the varied stage program of the Virada Cultural: literature featured in the event’s name, alongside other cultural areas.

As part of the announced Virada Cultural, a food fair and a fair for handicrafts and local products were planned in Bairro Boa Vista (Praia da Aruanha). This complemented the stage and arts programs with food, handicrafts and products from the local area. For the Festa de Reis in Catu, a procession of the Santos Reis from Praça Duque de Caxias to Barão de Camaçari was planned; the named squares and streets give this program item a specific local context.

Your choice of destination can therefore include a mix of religious heritage, cultural institutions, artistic formats, and events featuring literature or local products. If these themes would enrich your trip, you can consider staying in Catu and then look for suitable vacation rentals in town. For more information, visit the destination page for Catu.
