Junín Department: Nature, Culture and Excursions
Accommodation in Junín Department
In Junín Department, mountain landscapes and water experiences come together with cultural sites and regional traditions. You can enjoy panoramic views along self-guided trails, hike to waterfalls, or discover historic sites and local crafts. When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth first considering which places and experiences you want to shape your trip.
Water, Forest and Views
Mogote Bayo Nature Reserve has two self-guided trails with panoramic views of the Valle del Conlara and the Sierras de los Comechingones. Those who enjoy walking will also find a variety of waterscapes: a hike through the mountain forest leads to the 13-metre-high Cascada Anahí waterfall. Quebrada del Aguilucho can be reached on foot via a climb along the Arroyo Los Molles. Natural pools with emerald-green water lie along the way, and the trail also takes in native flora and fauna.
Los Molles combines clear streams, waterfalls, unspoilt nature and opportunities for outdoor activities. One of its excursion destinations is Los Siete Saltos, where the stream’s gradient has created tall cascades. If you want to focus on nature, you can consider these waterfall destinations alongside the trails in Mogote Bayo. The trails and excursions mentioned here vary in character; when planning your day, you can take into account whether you would prefer a self-guided hike or a climb alongside a stream.
Viewpoints offer their own highlights, too. Mirador del Sol is a viewing balcony at 1,470 metres above sea level, with panoramic views of the city and valley. At Filo Serrano, mountain experiences such as horseback riding, suspension bridges and ziplining are on offer. In Carpintería, known as the “Capital of Free Flight”, visitors can take off by paraglider from Filo de los Comechingones.
Places for Shared Discoveries
The El Talar complex on the Arroyo Los Molles includes an eight-hectare park with native vegetation. Day-use facilities include a campsite, sports courts, a swimming pool and picnic areas. El Talar therefore offers different options from a hike to a cascade: you can plan your visit around the facilities and parkland described here.
In Merlo, Parque Recreativo is an emblematic venue for social, cultural, sporting and artistic activities. Casa del Poeta Agüero is also located in Merlo. It offers free guided tours and welcomes school groups from across the province each week, as well as tourists from various parts of the country. Its auditorium has 120 seats. Merlo also has a local bus, El Merlino, which operates two tourist routes to help visitors get around.
Carpintería offers several cultural and craft-related attractions. The religious tour includes Iglesia de la Virgen de Luján, opposite Manuel Zalazar main square. At the foot of the Sierras, the town is also home to the Monastery of Santa María de la Santísima Trinidad, which belongs to the monastic family of Bethlehem of the Assumption of the Virgin and Saint Bruno. At the El Cimarrón estate, you can watch mate gourds being made. Ayflo’s alfajor factory has a restaurant with a bar where visitors can sample its specialties.
Culture and Regional History
Other stops reveal different traces of history. Capilla Nuestra Señora del Rosario is a landmark in the historic centre of Villa de Merlo. Capilla Virgen de las Mercedes, also known as Capilla de los Funes, is located in Paraje Punta del Agua and is listed as cultural heritage of San Luis Province. Reserva El Viejo Molino is home to an old Comechingón altar and the foundations of Merlo’s first grain mill. Near Cueva del Indio in Los Lobos, there is a site with rock paintings and archaeological remains.
This variety can help shape your choice of destination and holiday rental: Merlo offers insights into cultural sites, viewpoints and local bus routes; Carpintería combines religious sites, mate crafts and paragliding launches.
