Coastal town with a sea lion colony

La Lobería is a beach resort and town on the northern coast of the Gulf of San Matías, near its beginning. Its distinctive character is shaped by the Punta Bermeja “La Lobería” Nature Reserve: it extends across the beaches of La Lobería and protects the northernmost breeding colony of South American sea lions in Patagonia. Families traveling with children and anyone interested in coastal wildlife will find a specific natural feature here that helps define their stay.

The Punta Bermeja-La Lobería protected area covers 1,900 hectares, including 870 hectares of land, and stretches for 14 kilometers along the coast. It was established in 1971 to protect the breeding colony. Its size and conservation purpose give the area a different focus from a beach-only stay: the coast, sea lions, and the protected area's landscape are all part of the experience, so there is more to explore than a single visit to the beach.

Observe and explore

From a viewpoint on the cliffs of Punta Bermeja, visitors can observe sea lions and coastal birds. The cliff-edge viewpoint at the Punta Bermeja Fauna Reserve also overlooks the beach and the sea lion colony. The Reserve's Interpretation Center and the Punta Bermeja Fauna Interpretation Center offer another way to learn about wildlife: at the center, visitors can learn about the lives of sea lions and observe representative animal and plant species of the region.

In the area around La Lobería, Punta Bermeja offers guided walks and educational trails. This makes it possible to tailor a visit to different interests: you can focus on the coastal landscape during a walk or learn more about regional flora and fauna at the interpretation center. At low tide, natural rock pools appear at La Lobería, offering adults and children a calm place to swim. The beach experience therefore also depends on the tides; the rock pools and wildlife watching are different reasons to spend time here.

Coastal route and getting there

La Lobería can be reached via the fully paved Ruta Provincial N°1. However, after strong winds or rain, sandbanks can block the access road. There is also a bus connection from Viedma to La Lobería. This travel information can help you plan your journey to suit your preferred mode of travel, without implying a set duration or specific itinerary.

The 210-kilometer Camino de la Costa runs along Ruta Provincial N°1 and includes Balneario La Lobería and the ANP Punta Bermeja. West of La Lobería, Ruta Provincial N°1 follows a scenic coastal route past extensive cliffs and unspoiled beaches. If you want to take in the wider coastal landscape as well as the beach resort, you can consider this route as part of the region's broader context.

Tailor your stay

When choosing a vacation rental in La Lobería, start by considering which aspect of the area interests you most: the sea lion colony and its viewing points, the rock pools at low tide, or walks and educational trails nearby. Balneario La Lobería also has a campground with fire pits, shelters, and barbecue facilities.

If you would like to explore other nearby places, you can also find Balneario El Cóndor and Viedma here.
