Accommodation in Maraco
In the Departamento de Maracó, a distinctive natural landscape meets a range of cultural attractions. The Reserva Natural Urbana “Benicio Delfín Pérez” brings water, plant life, and birds into focus, while cultural venues and events offer a different perspective. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Maraco, you can start by considering whether nature experiences or culture and events should be the main focus of your trip.
Water and biodiversity in the Reserva
The Reserva Natural Urbana “Benicio Delfín Pérez” is located in the city of General Pico. It covers approximately 170 hectares, more than 60 percent of which is covered by water. Its main body of water is called “La Arocena.” This scale gives the natural area a distinct character: water is not a minor feature, but shapes a large part of the landscape.
The plant and bird life also make the area noteworthy for travelers interested in nature. The Reserva is home to more than 100 plant species, over 50 percent of which are native and endemic. There are also more than 150 bird species. Most are resident birds, while more than 20 percent are migratory. Those interested in native plants or bird species will find a specific nature-focused highlight to include in their travel plans. The figures also reflect different aspects of the area: the diversity of its plants and the composition of its birdlife.
An active event connected with the Reserva was planned for the second edition of “El Reto.” The trail-running and mountain-biking event was set to take place there, with running and mountain biking planned, as well as an optional duathlon. These activities give an idea of the sporting disciplines brought together at the event without reducing the natural area to a sports venue alone.
Cultural venues and local events
The Centro Cultural Maracó is housed in the former “Industrias Maracó” building. El Viejo Galpón also has a connection to the former premises of “Industrias Maracó”: the venue was established there in the early 1990s. Each of these historical connections is part of the respective venue’s own story. Peñas are held at El Viejo Galpón, which also hosts the “Jam de El Viejo Galpón.” Those interested in local culture and making music together can consider these events as a reason to visit in their own right.
Another cultural venue is the Sala de Artes Escénicas in General Pico’s historic railway station. Together with the Centro Cultural Maracó and El Viejo Galpón, it offers a range of cultural perspectives: a cultural center in a former industrial building, an event venue hosting peñas and a jam, and a performing arts space in a historic railway station. The Festival Pico Cumple has also established itself as one of the most important events on the local calendar. In addition to individual venues, culture lovers can experience a festival as part of the local events scene.
Getting there and choosing your trip’s focus
General Pico can be reached via Provincial Routes 1, 4, 101, and 102. These four roads can help you plan your route. When looking for a vacation rental in Maraco, you can start with the kind of trip you have in mind: the Reserva offers bodies of water, plant life, and bird species, while cultural venues, peñas, a jam, and a festival offer a different focus. You can then decide how to balance nature and cultural experiences according to what you’re most interested in discovering during your stay.
