The Posta de Hornillos brings together regional architecture and a striking chapter in Jujuy’s history. Stone-paved courtyards, corrals and a complex built from adobe, clay and cardón shape the site. The Tren Solar de la Quebrada is another special point of interest around Hornillos: a stop was inaugurated at the historic posta. This lets you consider cultural interests and the idea of a journey through the Quebrada together when planning your trip.

Architecture and History of the Posta

The historic site known as the “Posta de Hornillos” is located in the town of Maimará, in the Tilcara Department of Jujuy Province. It was declared a National Historic Site under Argentine Law No. 25,574. The complex is built from adobe, clay and cardón and arranged around stone-paved courtyards and corrals. Its architecture and spatial layout offer a concrete way to explore the region’s architecture: rather than looking at individual structural elements alone, you can understand the whole layout as an integrated complex.

The grounds also contain a 20th-century chapel. It was built using the construction techniques common in the Quebrada and in its architectural style. The chapel and the rest of the complex offer different points of interest for culturally minded travellers: one is a 20th-century building within a historic site, while the other is the complex with its courtyards and corrals. Families can make exploring the architecture a shared activity without needing any special prior knowledge.

Through the Quebrada on the Tren Solar

The stop at the Posta de Hornillos was established to make it easier to access the 42-kilometre route between Volcán and Tilcara. The Tren Solar is powered by solar energy and lithium batteries. This makes the train a distinct travel option alongside the history and architecture of the posta. The route is one of the facts you can consider when choosing the focus of your trip: would you like to concentrate mainly on regional culture, or are you also interested in taking the full train journey through the Quebrada?

The Tren Solar’s 360° experience includes the full journey, with six scheduled stops: Volcán, Tumbaya, Purmamarca, Posta de Hornillos, Maimará and Tilcara. These stops are part of the journey described; this does not mean that the individual places form a shared sightseeing route. When looking for a holiday rental in Hornillos, your own interests can therefore be a useful starting point: architecture and history offer a different focus from a trip on which you are especially keen to experience the rail connection.

Further Cultural Connections

The Antigal de Hornillos is presented in Maimará’s tourist offerings alongside the Posta de Hornillos as archaeological cultural heritage. This adds an archaeological connection to the historic site’s architecture. El Patio Hornillos was presented as a dining option with a local identity, intended to contribute regional flavours and a cultural meeting place to the visitor experience. A traditional ceremony honouring Pachamama took place at the Posta de Hornillos on 23 August 2025. It was part of Jujuy’s official August programme and included rites of thanksgiving and offerings. This date describes a past event, not an upcoming event.

Other destinations in the same broader destination area: Purmamarca, Maimará, Huacalera, Tilcara, Yala, Humahuaca, Ciudad Perico and Calilegua.
