Colón Department: Beaches, Thermal Baths and Nature
Accommodation in Colón Department
White sand along the Uruguay River, thermal pools and protected nature shape the excursion options in Colón Department. At Balneario San José, a 1.5-kilometer-long white sand beach stretches along the river. There are also natural areas, historic sites and activities related to agriculture and regional products. This lets you focus your trip planning on different interests rather than centering your stay on just one type of excursion.
Experience the Riverbanks and Nature
Balneario San José combines a beach on the Uruguay River with a nature reserve that protects part of the riparian forests, as well as native flora and fauna. Excursions, outings, rides, wildlife watching, tours and walks are also offered at the balneario. If you prefer spending time outdoors, you’ll find different ways to take in the landscape—from relaxing on the sandy beach to observing wildlife.
Another nature-focused attraction is Parque Río de los Pájaros, a multi-purpose natural area created to protect a wetland and its biodiversity. You can hike, observe flora and fauna, and go on bike rides there. Guided visits with local tourism guides can be arranged with advance reservations. When planning, it’s therefore important to distinguish between independent activities and a guided visit: the latter requires a reservation.
Thermal Baths with a Variety of Pools
Termas Colón has thirteen pools, including nine outdoor pools and three indoor pools. The grounds offer views of the Uruguay River and its beaches. If you’d like to combine thermal pools with views of the river, you can make this a distinct focus of your trip.
The Termas Villa Elisa thermal complex also offers several pools. It covers 41 hectares and has ten pools for different uses and at different temperatures. Its size and range of pools give you two specific points of comparison when deciding which thermal bath best suits your interests. If you’re planning several outings, you can include the thermal baths as one option alongside the beach, nature and culture.
Cultural History and Regional Experiences
The ruins of Falansterio are a historical and cultural attraction in Colonia Hughes, in Colón Department. Museo Histórico La Clarita is housed in a former railway station building. The two places offer different ways to explore cultural history: one features the ruins of a historic site, while the other is a museum in a building that once served a different purpose.
The former Fábrica Colón is part of the history of Pueblo Liebig. It was a large slaughterhouse that led to the founding of Pueblo Liebig and operated for about 70 years. If you’re interested in how a place developed, you can include this historical story in your explorations alongside the ruins and the museum.
Visitors can learn about agriculture and regional produce at Granja La Administración. It has an animal farm, a dairy and a cheese factory; cow milking is offered in the late afternoon. A visit also includes a country-style snack featuring regional products, craft beer and homemade bread. This makes it different from the nature and thermal bath options, adding a culinary and agricultural focus to your trip.
