A small Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, rock art near Cerro San José and a 30-kilometre trekking route make Ciénaga de Allende a destination with a variety of discoveries. Local history and trails are closely connected here: the Sendero Cuesta de Altautina passes the chapel and cemetery. This means you can factor both cultural history and a longer hike into your plans for your stay.

The Chapel and Local History

The history of the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus goes back to a small oratory. It has been recorded in the parish registers of San Alberto since 26 September 1874. On 28 October 1878, Pedro and Feliciano Allende donated seven blocks of land to the church for the construction of a church and a settlement in its surroundings. The Chapel of Ciénaga de Allende was completed in 1882 and consists of a single nave. These dates tell the story of several stages: from the small oratory at first, through the donation of land, to the completed chapel.

The rest of the story was not straightforward either. In 1890, the small church lay in ruins and had to close; Cura Brochero rebuilt it. The cemetery of Ciénaga de Allende was built in 1885. The chapel and cemetery are therefore tangible points of reference if you are interested in local history. The Sendero Cuesta de Altautina also passes the cemetery and the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Rock Art and Outings Nearby

A short distance from Ciénaga de Allende, along the road to Altautina, natural rock overhangs with rock art can be found at Cerro San José. They offer a different kind of discovery from the chapel and cemetery: here, the focus is on the rock formations and the images beneath the overhangs. The rock art is in the immediate surroundings of the town; the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, by contrast, is part of local history and also a point along the trekking route.

Nearby, Cascada y Cerro La Gloria offers a family outing with three elements: a section by bicycle, walks along the stream and a climb up Cerro La Gloria. Cascada de La Gloria lies along the stream of the same name, at the foot of Cerro La Gloria and on the way to Ciénaga de Allende. If you would like to include a climb as well as the waterfall and stream, this offers a different focus from a visit to the chapel or the rock art.

Trails for Different Travel Plans

The Sendero Cuesta de Altautina is a 30-kilometre, full-day trekking route of moderate difficulty. It follows the trail to Cascada La Gloria and passes Pozo del Algarrobo, the cemetery and the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its length, duration and difficulty make it easy to consider this route as a destination in its own right. It differs from an outing that includes only individual places in the surrounding area.

Another story connected with the trails is the fifth youth pilgrimage to the shrine of Santo Cura Brochero. The participants gathered in Ciénaga de Allende and walked together along the Camino de la Gloria to Cura Brochero, covering a total of 25 kilometres. There is also a 38.04-kilometre excursion route from Villa Cura Brochero via Ciénaga de Allende to Cura Brochero. These examples represent different contexts: a pilgrimage on foot and a route that places Ciénaga de Allende between two place names.

Ciénaga de Allende as a Base

Ciénaga de Allende is located on Provincial Route 307. When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider which of the experiences mentioned will shape your trip: local history with the chapel and cemetery, the rock art at Cerro San José or a longer trail such as the Cuesta de Altautina. If your plans include the excursion route through Ciénaga de Allende, the town is also part of its course.

For more ideas of places to visit, you can also discover Mina Clavero, Las Calles, Los Hornillos, Panaholma and Villa Cura Brochero.
