San Andrés De Giles Partido: Rural History and Countryside Discoveries
Accommodation in San Andrés De Giles Partido
In Partido de San Andrés de Giles, rural local history and regional routes come together. In particular, Azcuénaga combines the tranquillity of country life with vibrant nature and local history; community-based tourism there enhances the area’s cultural heritage. If you would like to explore small towns, historic architecture and regional traditions with your family, this rural setting offers a specific focus for your trip. The transport routes and the history of Estancia La Merced also provide different reasons to plan your stay.
Routes through the Partido and to Azcuénaga
Ruta Nacional 7, Ruta Nacional 8 and Ruta Provincial 41 cross Partido de San Andrés de Giles. For long-distance travel, they connect different parts of the country: Ruta Nacional 7 runs from Buenos Aires to Mendoza, while Ruta Nacional 8 connects Buenos Aires with Córdoba and the north of the country. Ruta Provincial 41 connects Baradero with Ruta Nacional 2.
Ruta 193 begins at Ruta Nacional 7 near the entrance to San Andrés de Giles and runs to Zárate via Azcuénaga and Solís. Road surfaces are important when planning your route: Ruta 193 is unpaved between the town of San Andrés de Giles and Ruta 8. Azcuénaga can also be reached via Ruta Nacional 7 to the San Andrés de Giles exit, as well as via Carlos Keen, continuing through Villa Ruiz and along the old Camino Real. Another option is via Ruta Nacional 8 near Solís; this second option includes an 800-metre unpaved section. This lets you choose the access route that best suits your planned journey.
Rural History and Architecture
Estancia La Merced, also known as Posta de Figueroa, is designated a National Historic Monument in the Partido. A precisely dated historical reference is 20 December 1834: on that day, Juan Manuel de Rosas wrote the document known as the Carta de la Hacienda de Figueroa to Facundo Quiroga at Estancia La Merced. Hacienda de Figueroa is also an example of early agricultural settlements and the architecture that developed in the Buenos Aires region during the Hispanic period. Visitors interested in history will find several interconnected themes here: the development of rural areas, historic architecture and a specific written document from the 19th century.
In Azcuénaga, Capilla Nuestra Señora del Rosario is a church in the Neo-Romanesque style, inaugurated in 1907. Other places and institutions associated with the town include Estación de ferrocarril Azcuénaga railway station, Plaza Miguel Azcuénaga and Club Recreativo Apolo.
Regional Festivals and Culinary Traditions
Festival traditions also offer an insight into local culture. The second Fiesta del Salame más largo de Argentina was held in Parque Municipal. The programme included artisans and producers, as well as musicians, singers and dancers. A food stall was run by Asociación de Bomberos Voluntarios; an inaugural edition had already taken place the previous year. The event thus brought together culinary themes, crafts and music.
In Azcuénaga, the 9th Fiesta de la Galleta de Campo was scheduled for Sunday, 13 September, from 11 a.m. at the railway station grounds. Plans included the sale of Galleta de Campo, artistic performances, a market featuring artisans and entrepreneurs, a food area and a canteen service. Panadería La Moderna was also involved in organising the traditional Fiesta de la Galleta de Campo en Horno a Leña. In Villa Ruiz, the traditional Fiestas Patronales were announced for 15 and 16 August at Plaza del Sol, at the intersection of Isidro Cucullu and Chacabuco. Admission was to be free; religious, cultural and recreational activities were planned for residents and tourists.
When choosing your holiday rental, you could first consider which aspect of the Partido interests you most: Azcuénaga’s rural character, the historical connections of Estancia La Merced or the regional festival traditions. If you plan to visit several places, factor the road connections mentioned above and the unpaved sections into your route planning.
