The coast, lagoon and Sierras give General Pueyrredón Partido its varied character: along the 47-kilometre coast of Mar del Plata, beaches, broad bays, cliffs and forests alternate within the municipality. Inland, gently rolling fields, clusters of trees, lagoons and streams shape the rural landscape. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether coastal scenery, nature experiences or culture will be the focus of your stay.

Coastal views and inland landscapes

In the southern part of the Partido, Ruta 11 runs along the coast. The road passes through areas lined with small woods and offers numerous panoramic views. Ruta 226 is also worth considering for a drive through changing landscapes: along its route through the area, you will encounter hilly terrain, lagoons, streams and Sierras; there are also tourist and recreational facilities for nature experiences, with extensive infrastructure.

The elevations mentioned include the Sierras del Acha, de Valdez, de los Padres, de los Difuntos and de la Peregrina. They lie among cultivated fields and old clusters of trees. At 230 metres, Sierra de la Peregrina is the highest of these elevations. Fruit and vegetable growing areas and quarries are also part of the rural landscape. The paved Ruta 88, Camino de las Canteras and Camino San Francisco de Asís pass through such areas.

Laguna de los Padres: nature and a range of interests

The Reserva Natural Municipal Laguna de los Padres is dedicated to protecting and preserving flora, fauna and bodies of water. It is also intended for recreational, sporting, cultural, scientific and educational uses. Nature and a range of activities therefore coexist, without limiting a visit to a single pursuit. The Laguna is suitable for rowing on the Alberto Valle course and is considered an important venue for sport fishing.

Four authorised access points are marked for visitors: the main entrance on Avenida de Los Misioneros and three secondary entrances. Camino del Cabildo Indígena leads to the Museo Municipal José Hernández, Calle Helmer Uranga to the island area, and Camino Cacique Cangapol to Avenida Padre Luis Varetto in the direction of Sierra de los Padres. The museum is on Ruta 226 at kilometre 13.2, at the second entrance to the Laguna via Camino del Cabildo Indígena.

The museum is housed in the original main building of the former Estancia Laguna de los Padres. The building was constructed in 1882 and designated a heritage site by the Municipalidad de General Pueyrredón. Its permanent exhibition covers early settlement, new population groups, the first Indigenous settlements and missions, the cacique Cangapol “El Bravo”, and the region’s rural history and the Estancia Laguna de los Padres.

Culture and history in the municipality

Casa sobre el Arroyo, locally also known as Casa del Puente, was designed and built by Amancio Williams and Delfina Gálvez Bunge between 1943 and 1945. It is designated a National Historic-Artistic Monument, a heritage site of the Province of Buenos Aires and, at municipal level, an asset of heritage, cultural and natural importance; it is also designated a forest reserve. Advance registration is required for guided tours of the house, and each tour is limited to 30 people.

The park of Casa del Puente comprises two adjoining city blocks, crossed by the historic course of Arroyo Las Chacras. As an active environmental reserve, it is home to wild animal and plant species. Those interested in architecture will also find the Museo Municipal de Arte Juan Carlos Castagnino in the municipality, housed in Villa Ortiz Basualdo, built in 1909 in the Norman Picturesque style. A standard guided tour covers the architecture, decorative styles, original furnishings, the family’s history and the museum’s main features. It lasts approximately 45 minutes, costs the admission price and is accessible only by stairs.

Further historical highlights include the Reducción de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de los Puelches, founded by the Jesuits in the mid-18th century and considered one of the early settlements of Mar del Plata, as well as the Chapel of Santa Cecilia, built in 1873 and the city’s first solid building. The Torreón del Monje at Punta Piedras, at the foot of Loma de Stella Maris, resembles an old fortress and evokes the legend that made it immortal.

The port and other places to explore

The port of Mar del Plata combines maritime sights with regional cuisine: seafood and maritime dishes are associated with it. The visitor route around the port includes sea lions, seagulls, fishing boats, nets and fish traps. The Museo del Hombre del Puerto Cleto Ciocchini focuses on the port’s cultural and historical heritage, as well as anthropological, sociological and historical research. Parque Camet is also highlighted as a green spot to visit while exploring the northern part of Mar del Plata.

For further orientation within the Partido: Colonia Chapadmalal, La Estafeta, Camet, Mar Del Plata, Sierra De Los Padres and Barrio Colinas Verdes.

Whether you plan your trip around the coast and port, the Laguna, or culture and landscapes, the area’s varied attractions can help you choose the right place for your holiday apartment in General Pueyrredón Partido.
