Makeni combines urban life with trails through the wilderness and opportunities for active exploration. As a trading town and economic centre of the Northern Province, it has a distinct urban character; market visits, cultural sites and nature experiences offer different highlights. When planning your trip, consider whether Makeni itself should be the main focus or whether it should also serve as a starting point for continuing north.

Market Life and Culture in Makeni

At Makeni Market, you can wander between the stalls, try local snacks and chat with traders. This makes a visit an opportunity to get to know Makeni through its everyday trading scene: you can browse, sample something and take your time meeting people. What is available at the market may change.

Two cultural sites are also connected with specific visits to Makeni: on 6 and 7 October 2025, visits to Wusum Hills (Waterworks) and the People’s Education Art and Craft Centre took place as part of ecotourism training. This event, tied to a specific time, adds named locations and a historical connection to the urban perspective.

Hiking Trails, Views and Running Routes

Mena Hills in Makeni offers hiking trails through the wilderness. Mena Hill, in turn, offers a view of another part of Makeni. These two descriptions show different aspects of the landscape: trails through wild terrain and a view back over another part of the city. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, this offers a different focus from strolling around the market.

The running routes also differ considerably in length. As part of the 2026 Marathon and Cycling Challenge, a 5 km fun run passes through the city centre; the 21 km half-marathon route runs along the edge of Wusum Hill. Comparing the distances helps you decide whether you are more interested in a shorter city route or a longer challenge.

Makeni as a Base and Place to Stay

Travellers use Makeni as a starting point for continuing north to Outamba-Kilimi National Park. The town can therefore play a role in a trip both for its own urban and nature experiences and as a place to continue the journey. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Makeni, consider whether you mainly want to explore the market, the city and the activities mentioned, or include the city as part of a trip that continues north. This helps you choose a destination without making assumptions about the features of any particular accommodation.

Northern as a Wider Travel Destination

Beyond Makeni, Northern offers a range of nature and cultural highlights. At the Mamunta Mayosso Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Tonkolili District, endangered dwarf crocodiles are protected. It is one of the few areas in Sierra Leone with this kind of protection; despite its small size, the sanctuary is home to 252 bird species. Tonkolili District is part of the Northern Province.

The Wara Wara Mountains are in Koinadugu District, immediately northwest of Kabala. The landscape is characterised by rugged hills reaching heights of up to 1,000 metres. The Loma Mountains are also in Koinadugu District and contain diverse wildlife habitats, including habitats for pygmy hippos and viviparous toads. These areas represent different landscape and nature themes from those of the city of Makeni.

Lake Sonfon, in the Diang Chiefdom of Koinadugu District, is associated with traditional beliefs and local cultural ceremonies. The lake’s birdlife has also been documented historically: an IBA survey recorded 115 bird species at the lake and in the surrounding vegetation in 1994. Together, the lake, mountains and sanctuary illustrate the diversity of nature and culture in the wider travel destination of Northern.
