Freetown International Airport and routes across Tagrin Bay shape part of Lungi’s travel connections; beaches, islands and boat races offer other points of interest. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Lungi, this distinction can help with your travel planning: would you mainly like to explore the area’s beaches and islands, or is onward travel to Freetown your priority?

Beaches and islands near Lungi

In 2019, road, ferry and water-taxi connections from Freetown International Airport in Lungi to Freetown crossed Tagrin Bay. Check which connections are currently available before travelling. This helps distinguish the airport and onward-travel connections from the local beach and island attractions, without combining them into a single itinerary.

Banda Beach is a beach in Lungi. The beach area also includes the coastal stretch next to Briefcase Entertainment. Cultural director Foday Jalloh described the islands in Kaffu Bullom, Lungi, as suitable for ecotourism because of their flora. These are distinct features: a named beach, another coastal stretch and an ecological assessment of the islands. When choosing accommodation in Lungi, you can consider which of these local features best matches your travel interests.

Boat races and another island attraction

Boat races are described as common at the island settlements formed by Yanlensun, Mabakeh, Bombali and Kerefey in Kaffu Bullom, Lungi. The Ministry of Tourism wanted to include boat races in its year-round campaign. Alongside the beaches and islands, this gives you another point of reference for deciding which aspects of Lungi are of particular interest for your stay.

In the wider destination area, the Tasso Ecotourism Project offers a separate attraction: it lists canoeing as an activity for stays on Tasso Island. The operator also says that guests are transported to and from the island in a purpose-built seaworthy canoe. If Tasso is part of your travel plans, confirm current transfer arrangements directly with the operator. Canoeing adds another activity associated with a different location to the beaches, islands and boat-racing themes mentioned in Lungi.

Northern: nature and culture in the wider destination

The wider destination of Northern offers further landscape and nature attractions. Mamunta Mayosso Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the few areas in Sierra Leone that protects the endangered dwarf crocodile. Despite its small size, it is home to 252 bird species. These conservation and birdlife attractions offer a distinct regional focus alongside Lungi’s beaches and islands.

The Wara Wara Mountains in Koinadugu District, immediately northwest of Kabala, are characterized by steep, jagged hills reaching heights of up to 1,000 metres. Also in Koinadugu District, the Loma Mountains offer diverse wildlife habitats, including those of pygmy hippos and viviparous toads. The two mountain areas combine distinctive landscapes with different nature attractions. For regional travel planning, this mountain and wildlife context can be clearly distinguished from Lungi’s beaches, islands and coastal attractions.

At Lake Sonfon in Diang Chiefdom, in Koinadugu District of Northern Province, traditional beliefs and local cultural ceremonies are considered important. An IBA survey recorded 115 bird species at the lake and in the surrounding vegetation in 1994. This regional example combines cultural significance with a historical nature reference; the bird count refers specifically to that survey. When choosing destinations, you can weigh different priorities without conflating the features of Northern with those of Lungi.
