Faleolo International Airport is Samoa’s main international gateway by air and serves both international and domestic flights. When planning a trip with Faleolo as your arrival point, both the services available at the airport and onward travel arrangements are relevant. You can also choose a holiday rental based on the experiences you want to focus on in Samoa.

Arriving and finding your way around Faleolo

Faleolo International Airport has a Samoa Tourism Information office, souvenir shops, two banks, several car rental companies and currency exchange facilities. Two telecommunications providers may be useful for travellers who need a local SIM card. Check in advance which of the services you need are available for your trip, as individual providers may change.

For daytime arrivals before 5 pm, a local bus to Apia departs from the airport’s main entrance. Shuttle buses also run from the airport to Samoa’s major resorts and hotels. If your arrival falls within the stated time condition, you can plan to take the bus to Apia as one option. Check current availability and suitable destinations locally; no regular departure schedule is assumed for the shuttle buses.

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to consider your arrival and destinations together: think about which places and experiences in Samoa matter most to you and what onward travel would suit them. The airport gives you a specific arrival point, while the examples below cover a range of cultural and nature interests across Samoa as a wider travel destination.

Samoa: culture, water and special places

Samoa has ten islands, four of which are inhabited: Upolu, Savai’i, Apolima and Manono. Cultural experiences in Samoa include the area around Sopoaga Waterfall, where demonstrations of umu preparation and coconut husking take place. This combines a visit to the waterfall with a look at practical demonstrations.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s story is also linked to a place in Samoa: the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum is described as the place where the Scottish poet and author fell in love. The Pa Sopo’ia Cave offers a different cultural perspective. According to Samoan tradition, it is an ancient passage through which the spirits of ancestors reach Devil’s Haden at Cape Mulinu’u. This is said to be their final meeting place before Pulotu, the spirit world.

Water spots and activities

The To-Sua Ocean Trench is 30 metres deep. A long ladder leads down to a platform in the water pool. There is also a cave in the trench that leads to the open sea; it is recommended for experienced divers. Keep this restriction in mind if you are considering the cave as an activity for your trip.

Piula Cave Pool is on the Main East Coast Road at Piula Theological College in the village of Lufilufi, about 45 minutes from Apia. Its underwater cave is connected to a second cave. Day fales and toilets are available at Piula Cave Pool; confirm before setting out whether the facilities are currently available.

Papase’ea Sliding Rocks are in Se’ese’e in the Faleata district, about a 15-minute drive from Apia. There are two sliding areas: one for children and one for adults. When choosing an activity, you can take into account which area is intended for the participants in your group.

Apia and nearby routes

Palolo Deep Marine Reserve is about a five-minute walk from the centre of Apia. A popular walking trail in Apia leads to Robert Louis Stevenson’s grave and offers views of Samoa’s capital. If you plan to walk the trail, check that it is accessible before your outing.

The time estimates give different points of reference from Apia: about a five-minute walk from the centre to Palolo Deep Marine Reserve, about a 15-minute drive to Papase’ea Sliding Rocks, and about 45 minutes to Piula Cave Pool. They refer to different places and, in some cases, different modes of transport; actual travel times may vary. For your trip and holiday-rental planning, these examples can help you organise your priorities: cultural insights, a water destination, a trail in Apia, or an activity with separate areas for children and adults.
